This Connexion article shows new Crit'Air zones to be introduced this year (2024).
For those that don't know, Crit'Air zones require all vehicles within the zone to be classified according to the amount of emissions it creates, there are 6 categories, one for electric vehicles and then 1 through 5 for those using conventional fuels . Our Euro 6 compliant motorhome is a class 2 vehicle and has a yellow sticker.
The original plan was I understand it, was that the more polluting vehicles would be banned from use on days when the pollution was high however, according to the Connexion article, some areas within the scheme have begun banning all vehicles that were in class 4 and above.
As I understand it, vehicles passing via autoroutes past/through these areas don't need to have the Crit'Air stickers but once you leave these routes, the scheme applies to all vehicles, including those that are foreign registered.
The new areas include Le Havre, Caen, Dunkirk, Rennes, Nantes, Bordeaux, Anger, Tours as well as many others. I don't know whether the Caen scheme extends out to Ouistreham and the ferry port but the Le Havre and Dunkirk ferry ports would be in their respective zones so I'd expect them to require the Crit'Air stickers displayed in vehicles windscreens passing through those areas. The fine for cars and motorbikes is €68, trucks it's €135.
It's easy enough to get the stickers, you fill in a form on-line and upload the vehicle details page of your vehicle V5C, pay your money and the sticker comes through in 10-14 days. It costs less than €5 if you go through the official government website, beware proxy sites that claim to do it for you, they charge more. The webpage linked is in English, it's very easy and straightforward to follow. The stickers are valid for the life of the vehicle.
There's going to be more and more zones cropping up in the future so to my mind if you want to visit France, it makes sense to do it.
