Never got to La Bouysse when my kids were little and we were tenting. No idea why, as the view of the castle was stunning and it was always on my list. Now I’m old and the kids have all grown and we are looking at restarting Caravanning, I might have to put it back on the list. The new and improved upgraded Mr Exessexmum hasn’t been to any of France apart from Calais (school trip) and Provence (gite three years ago) so I need to introduce him to my favourite bits, and that bit of the Dordogne is one of them. I wonder if it’s still a nice site? Do you pop by at all?

Good to see you happy and posting again.

Are you getting La Bouysse mixed up with Le Capeyrou at Beynac? On the river just on the way into village from Sarlat with a magificent view of the chateau which dominates the skyline.

You can't see a castle from La Bouysse although up until about 8 years ago the road from the D703 down to the river and campsites used to got through Montfort village with the chateau towering above (even more magnificent from a canoe on the river).

Ypu'll find quite a few reviews of Le Capeyrou on here - pass it fairly regularly and can;t say we've noticed any real changes.

La Bouyssse still run by the same family from when we first camped there in 2008 - run into them occasionally at the LeClercs in Sarlat and most recently last year at Le Chalet which is a seasonal restaurant on the banks of the Dordogne on the S bank at Vitrac Port - over the bridge towards Domme from Sarlat - lovely setting and good value for money.

Yes, I think I am mixing up the two. La Bouysse, riverside, nice potatoes, next to Soleil Plage. Le Capeyrou, castle. Both were on my list to go, never got to either. Think we'd planned a Dordogne trip one year and the forecast was vile so we moved to the Ardeche. We did stay further up the river one year at a little quiet site, and had a gite one year too near Domme.
And thank you. Hope life in the Dordogne is lovely. Does Val still post?

Val still posts but not as frequently as a few years ago.

Loving it here - nearly 6 years now. Live within a couple of miles of Domme. After an unusually wet February / March were having an unusually hot spell in April - 29C today. Never seen the area looking as green - and never had to mow the grass as often!

Your points are exactly right, Netherton; there has to be some reason to visit an area. Whilst I am happy for a short time to sit in the shade of our open awning, eating rillettes and pain just watching the world go by, I do like to “see” some of the area I’m in. And sometimes the area is more important than the site (more so now that the kids are bigger).

And Longcol, I really love the Dordogne. I love the weather, the ambience, the ancient caves (one of my sons is a geologist) and hiring a canoe and paddling down river. We’ve stayed in a few places, but my favourite site is in Monceaux close to Argentat. It is a little less touristy than further West but the river is really accessible (and useable) at various campsites in that part. Our favourite site really quietens down in the last two weeks of August so we have been there during that fortnight five times in the last ten years (topped and tailed with stops en route and back again).

It’s 20 years since we did Brittany so we might do that this year. Perhaps close to a beach. We’ve been to Le Pouldu before and may take a closer look at what that is like now-a-days.

Still cannot decide.

My ears pricked up when you said Brittany! It is easier for us to go to Brittany than many places in the UK, living on Dartmoor we are only 45 mins from the Ferry at Plymouth. If you want a site near a beach, quiet and friendly then Camping Pors Peron is worth a look, on the stunning Cap Sizun. Great walks and cycles, but not exactly great for nightclubs! 😂

When the forecast is set fair, Brittany takes some beating. 👍. We always wait until a few days before, then book a ferry.   Good luck with your search.

OK, I give in.

Brittany is great when the weather is fine, there's plenty of choice and for motorhomers, plenty of aires too.

These are the French sites we return to but we're still looking for our favourite site.

Camping du Polquer in Bénodet (Finistere), is a nice site. It's the opposite end of the promenade around the bay to the small town. Whenever I think of a Breton seaside town, it's Bénodet that comes to mind. The site has a pool and I think a bar in high season (never been there in high season to find out). The town has restaurants and bars and there's a supermarket on the outskirts. There's a very good market on Monday. If you want a site with more buzzers and bells there are other's to choose from in the area.

Camping Les Druides at Carnac Plage in Morbihan is a nice little site too. It has a pool but no bar or snack area but then Carnac Plage is only a short walk away. The beach is stunning. The market is one of our favourites.

Moving down to the Vendée, Camping La Grand Vallée at La Tranche sur Mer is a great little site. The snack and bar area are excellent value. The only downside is the nearby disco which carries on all night at the weekends (not that it bothered me, I can sleep through pretty much anything).

Further around the coast we like Camping au Port Punay in Châtelaillon Plage south of La Rochelle, great site, has a pool, bar and a shop. The people are great and very helpful. There's a beach nearby and you can catch a bus into La Rochelle.

If you want something inland and fancy a city break, Camping Nantes is probably one of the best municipal sites we've ever encountered. There's a restaurant on site and you get free access to the nearby municipal pool. The tram stop is just outside of the site and you can make your way into the city and les Machines de l’Île - go and ride on a giant mechanical elephant.

We have good memories associated with these sites which is why we keep going back.

Just catching up with replies now.

Thanks everyone (even Mr Wez finally gave in). It’s really interesting reading about what people like and where they like to go. This isn’t really about me getting recommendations (although they are welcome); more it is about understanding what other people look for and like.

Keep ‘em coming.

We have always been lucky with the weather in Brittany and Normandy. As we are usually on foot, walking from site to site, that is important.
We don't have any favourite sites. We do have sites we have liked and some we have returned to but that is mainly due to where they are more than anything else. We haven't done the staying on one site for two weeks thing since our kids grew up.
Liked sites -
Haliotis in Pontorson
Anse du Brick near Cherbourg
Les Helles - Combrit
Camping de l'ermitage - Granville
Camping de la cite d'alet - St Malo

Some are basic, one boasts 5 stars but all had pleasant staff, close to where we wanted to be and to restaurants. One is a bit quirky and all take backpacking tents.
The only thing I have noticed is the rise of the MH and the decrease in tents, even amongst the Dutch. Then there are the ideally situated sites that have gone chalet only. It is nice to be surrounded by tents sometimes. On one site in Cancale, we were the only tent.

Hi all

I've booked ferry crossings for this coming August (to Caen) but haven't yet booked a campsite (will only be one site I suspect as we only have 10 nights in France). We've been looking around at various different places we could camp. Some places we've visited before, some new ones; some by the sea, some by a river; some small and basic, some more large and "elaborate" etc. - a real mixture.

All this decision making made me wonder - what is *your* favourite site in France and why?

I look forward to seeing what you all like,

TC

Favourite site within easy reach of Caen - assuming you'd only want a drive of under 4 hours - Le Sabot at Azay le Rideau - formerly the municipal, now still owned by the commune but managed by a private company.

Never had to book, plenty of large, flat pitches. 10 mins walk into town and several restaurants. Decent Carrefour supermarket less than 5 mins drive away up the hill. Free use of the municipal pool next door.

In easy reach of the bulk of the Loire chateaux between Saumur in the west and Blois to the east.

Further away and on the coast - perhaps Interlude on the Ile de Re?

OK - some years since my review but went last year and still pretty much the same.

Very slightly OT, but does anyone know how much it is to cross onto the Ile de Ré nowadays, from memory it was around 18€ a few years ago.

Although we stay at Haliotis every year (normally a day or so at the beginning and end of our holiday as it's close to Cherbourg) I think it's slowly going downhill, couldn't believe it when we arrived last year and they have taken a lot of the bigger caravan pitches away and replaced them with static caravans/ mobile homes.

Obviously it's still good for a stopover but obviously attracts a different clientele now (which I think has had a negative effect on the atmosphere(

We’ve had lots that we like very much and would go back to, but as there’s so much of France to discover we rarely do!
Plus I think you can be disappointed if a much loved site changes. We have used Chateau de Chanteloup near Le Mans a lot, but it changed hands just before Covid and although the new team are nice, there are a lot of changes going on including the addition of statics in the lovely woodland.
Sites that we would - and do - recommend include another vote for Camping Nantes: great location, facilities that justify the steepish price and the loveliest site staff.
We also fell in love with Camping Port de Limeuil in the Dordogne. Just a fabulous location - paddling in the Dordogne river which runs alongside the site as the sun set was the perfect post-shielding treat for us both in 2021. The snack and bar would compete with your favourite English pub, the pool complex is just gorgeous (no slides!) and again the welcome we received was second to none.
We’re huge fans of Brittany, and found lots to like while doing a whistlestop coastal tour last year. Highlights included the beautifully situated de Trologot in St Pol de Leon and near Perros Guirec, the Camping Louannec municipal. Their guingette offered sublime ‘specials’, I was swimming in the sheltered cove at 9pm and it was 15 min walk along a safe, flat path into the bustling harbour. The team spoke no English but went out of their way to be helpful - they helped me remember from school French lessons that the ‘y’ in our surname is pronounced ‘E-Grec’

We used to stay here regularly too but have also noticed a decline in standards and negative changes since it has become part of a chain (Seasanova) and has lost the personal interest of its owners and long-standing workforce.
We had to wait over an hour to check-in on our visit last year - units were queuing most of the length of the drive - and it seemed that several people who had prebooked were being overcharged, for whatever reason, so adding to the delays.
We were debating whether or not to stay again this trip, but have also discovered that they now charge €5 per dog per night - although we use ACSI we have 2 dogs so have to pay extra for the 2nd dog - so it seems unlikely we’ll be returning.
As an alternative we have used the municipal Camping le Vieux Chatel at Combourg, which has a different sort of charm, in case you fancied a change!
