Am back. We are looking at buying a new caravan after a number of horrific years, wasn’t the pandemic fun, everyone? 😬
Anyway, it will mainly be for attending trade events with hubbys business, and UK breaks, but am considering if we might venture abroad with it…..only issue is we have a new baby, Chester the mini dachshund. He’d probably need to come with us, so is the new pet scheme a complete b at llache these days? Haven’t explored the detail yet, as the pre Brexit system seems complicated enough. Is it even doable any more?

Yes, have been doing some research. A new certificate for EVERY trip at between £100-300 a pop?! 😳

See if you can get one of the newer online ones that come to your house.
Cheaper than a vet and really good price for repeat certificates if required for next year.

Nobody I know takes a dog now when they go on holiday overseas - partly because of cost these days and also because so many people go by air nowadays. So they leave their dogs with family, friends and neighbours.- and my son has just left his own dog with his ex wife,

We always take our two dogs with us on our twice yearly trips abroad, as we are away for several weeks at a time. Also, one of them has epilepsy and needs two lots of medication twice a day, plus his fits are not nice to deal with when they happen, so we would not be happy to leave him with family or in kennels.
Fortunately, our dogs are rescues from Romania and came with EU passports, which we have kept valid by having their rabies jabs done in France, so we have not yet had to pay the price of the AHC.
We would if we'd had to though, as for us it would be all part of the cost of going away these days (like higher ferry, campsite and insurance prices) - we'd still have complained about it though!

We have used the vet at Folkestone - £99 for a first AHC and £69 thereafter providing none of the details have changed eg rabies vaccination date etc. Booked in advance and they were highly efficient.

My dog comes to mainland Europe with me, and AHC last year was 180 GBP and the worm treatment in France cost me about 35 EUR.

Don't know the prices for this year yet, however, I shall soon find out!

I am spending longer in mainland Europe from now on so as to make it more worthwhile getting an AHC - the first trip last year was only for a week!

DK, why don't you get a European Pet Passport while you are across the water, that's what we are doing.

Not over there often enough, only once a year, and too stressful to try and time it right for his booster etc...

He came over from Romania with a pet passport, and it was too stressful to try and have his boosters in time within a year.

Not if you have an honest (and hard-working) vet like ours. £90 for the first, £60 for each subsequent one. We still travel three times year, two of those times the cat comes with us. No other changes to pet travel - cats don't require a pre-return wormer but dogs still do.

There are now plenty of 'on-line' vets. You give them all the details, they do the certificate and you meet somewhere (even a home visit) to check the chip and hand over the certificate. Look for 'Animal health certificates near me). There are various groups offering lists of on-line (and more reasonably priced) vets, so no one should be paying £300 if they are willing to do a bit of research.

And for interest, the pandemic hardly touched us. In 2020 we managed our usual 88 days away in France, meeting up with family and friends. When a new lockdown was introduced the friend who was staying with us in France came back with us and stayed in our home for the 14 days quarantine. (She then bought a house four doors away as she loved it so much). In 2021 my sons hired a gite in our village which became free, and both came down to see us. In 2020 we were the only British family to visit one campsite in the Ardeche, and they gave us a bottle of fizz to celebrate.
