Anyone got any ideas whether or not the new regulations dealing with imported goods will affect us caravanners bringing, say, a couple of plants back from France?

I returned from in March bringing 3 plants with me. They were on view when the customs went into the shower where they were easily seen. Nothing was said and I bought them home. They were my wife’s so I don’t know what they were called.

It appears if the total weight is under 2kg. they're not on the list of things you need a certificate for (mainly seeds, bark and wood) and not an endangered species you should be OK.

I am surprised that people bring back foreign plants or wildlife to the UK as they could contain diseases that wipe out our indigenous plants or even affect wildlife. For instance the Japanese knotweed and other similar plants. Grey squirrels almost wiped out our indigenous red squirrel!

Hopefully border patrol will be stepped up to prevent plants and wildlife being imported into the UK!

Very different from going into NZ. Declaration form to fill in on the plane; I can’t take honey, or fresh fruit, or home made tea like dried Lime tree flower tea; a bottle of Echinacea tablets from Holland & Barrett was taken off to be checked after I’d listed it under the “dried leaves or seeds” section. Shoe & boot soles must be clean - no mud which could have British pathogens, or they’ll be taken off for treatment & returned. Sniffer dogs & then a final x-ray after all that before I go to my sister waiting outside.
Not feasible for the channel border, or proportionate to the risks. But UK doesn’t rely on agriculture (including bee keeping) like NZ does.

Rightly or wrongly I try and push the boundaries when I can, but not too far

eg take milk and a packet of bacon over in my fridge, bring back slightly more than my duty free allowance.

But one thing I would not do is bring back a plant.

As another poster has mentioned, this is why we have a problem with Japanese knotweed.

We brought a vine back from St. Emilion a couple of years ago. It came in a pot and now lives in a (much larger) pot. All OK so far.
