Our next trip is a hotel/road trip this week - have perused the Lidl catalogue and it's definitely on our to do list. Not much storage as we are in a mini but we have found an unexpected boxed in area around the spare wheel !

What Mini?

Intermarche wine fair started today, Got a couple of brochures in the letterbox yesterday - we're mid way between two. Not somewhere we usually shop and nothing that really tempts to make a one off journey to be honest.

Similar 4 euro plus wines to Lidl but nothing like the splendid CdR by the case at under 2 euro a bottle from Lidl.

There are some 700 euro plus bordeaux wines if anyone's interested,,,,,,,,,

Will wait to see what Carrefour and LeClerc have to offer later this month.

Eat your hearts out. In Nyons, at the cooperative, the Drome rouge sells for 1.34 a litre, en vrac. At the equivalent of 0.99 a bottle
Tastes better than the basic Lidl CdR but probably not as good as the fruite.

We never buy "en vrac" as it takes up too much room in the fridge. We prefer young, light, fruit reds to be chilled for half an hour to an hour before dinner. Came across this a good 35 years agom first stopping with a friend in Lyon, second time at a restaurant in Boulogne before catching the ferry - the Chinon fron the fridge was memorable,

Not worth it for us two and it would take up too much space in our bungalow. Some french fridges (the big ones with double doors) do have a dedicated space for wine boxes - usually the 5L variety.

Will have to continue to make do with the northerly bedroom which doesn't get direct sunlight being wine / beer/ bottled water store and the room for my PC and stereo.

LeClercs Wine Faire began today. We'd gone for a food shop but picked up 3 bottles - including a red Vielle Ferme at 3.85 euro. Remember buying it regularly in Waitrose 20 years ago for a similar cost in sterling - now £8.50 a bottle according to their website.

Shop again Monday so might pick up a few more - todays went down a treat with a home made cassoulet.

Big boxes are fine. Just keep them somewhere cool and decant into a bottle or two for immediate consumption. They can then be stored in the fridge.

Well following on from wine in September (although Carrefours is still going on), imagine my surprise yesterday when popping into Sarlat for some shopping, both Carrefour and LeClercs are having a beer fair which lasts for a week (first time I've seen one in our 6 years out here).

Some very good value 75cl bottles at around the 2.75 euro mark - currently drinking a Jenlain IPA and other IPA's such as Ch'ti, Slash and Castelain also availablet Good to see that a numbers of more British style beers availble, not just rhe usual french lager or highly alcoholic brews.

Current favourite beer is Castelains "session pale ale" - when my eldest son visited in June saw it for the first time and both thoroughly enjoyed it - he took half a dozen botttles home.

I just avoid anything that says "non filtre" - ie cloudy, which always reminds me of failed home brew experiments of 45 years ago.
