Camping Municipal Metz Plage looks like an ideal stop for visiting the city and UKCampsite has reviews here.
Looking at the site's virtual tour it looks like it mainly has grass pitches, does anyone have experience of this site in September/October? How soft do the pitches get, are we going to need mats or beg for a tow out? I would normally avoid grass pitches from late September onwards (weather dependent of course). Does the site have hardstanding pitches?
There's an aire by the entrance which is all on hardstanding but it's small and usually full.
Any help gratefully received.

UKCS has hardstands greyed out, but no reviews mention difficulties getting off the grass. Another website says “…the 151 pitches are on fairly level grass”. Only one TA review (Oct 2024) mentioned grass, saying “our pitch was muddy & churned up after lots of rain & previous campers…”
Sounds like mats might be a good idea; ours take up little space.
The latter is the concern really, we have some fairly heavy duty mats which work really well but are heavy and take up more space than the lightweight mats we have.

Its been some years since we stayed there. The site is many grass and not always that level but on the upper section there is an area of tarmac pitches suitable of motorhomes. See the picture.

David,
I realise I should have looked at your website (note to self), thanks for posting the link though, it looks as though we should try for one of those hardstanding pitches.
Bottom line is keep an eye on the weather and our plans loose.

I see the photo has appeared now, I couldn't get it to post, hence the link. Unfortunately the overseas reviews on my website are all prior to 2017 and are at risk of going out of date but I suspect you are on safe ground with the Metz campsite. Easy walk into town as well.
