Going to france in august - I hope.

I want to get to bordeux area, but it looks a long drive.  I'm debating on which ferry to book.  Advice is needed.

The options I see are

1. dover/calais   long drive.

2. ferry to St malo, more expensive shorter drive.

3. Ferry to Bilbao in north spain and drive up, more expensive again.

IS there a ferry to Bordeux area???  I would like ot hear peoples veiws on the best way down there.  I will be driving a VW camper that averages 60/70 mph.

PLEASEEE  help

You will be in VW camper territory down there--we are going Dover/Calais--the Dover route is miles cheaper than any other route this yr because of the price war started by Speedferries--(theres no ferry to Bordeaux)SW coast is easy 2 day drive from Calais via Rouen-Le Mans-Tours-Poitiers-N10 to Bordeaux---

If you google the following-(separately)- norfolk line-P&O-speedferries-seafrance you will get their websites & you can compare prices---for a car you should get summat like £60 for a period return--the fares are genrally cheaper if you travel late night/early morning--

Thank for the great info...  I thought that I was looking at £200+ to get across!!!!

Is it advisable to book now, or nearer the time???

Also.. still being new to this lark, my VW camper... what is it classed as? motorhome? van? its hardly what I'd call a motorhome... but it is converted!

While in France, do they charge extra if you put a tent up next to your camper??

One question for BILLY. I not had my camper long, its a 1984 2L. What milage range can I expect from a tank full?? normal driving?  (I'm in Bosnia now and trying to plan my hol, not had camper long)

You will get between 20-28mpg from 1.9 petrol Vw camper depending how fast you drive---dont let the tank get much less than one third full cos fuel gauge gets a bit inaccurate when it gets too low--capacity is 60 litres--I always book my camper on the ferry as VW Caravelle which is the MPV version--a VW camper(imho)is a Multi Purpose Vehicle--so it goes as a car not a motorhome--no probs with this in 6 yrs--
