Hi all

Finally decided WHAT to do & WHERE to go - we have decided to head to -

La Rochelle=Rochefort=Bordeaux area (its a start) havent decided on final campsite as yet but hey we are getting there slowly !

Doing the Calais Dover crossing as all others seem just to damn costly - crossing on Sunday morning early hours 1.15am (ouch) and wishing to travel for say 2 or 3 hours and stopping up - probably to wacked to camp?(maybe not as were in folding camper - 15mins and tucked up for the rest of the night) what do you guys think im trying to keep the cost down this year as i told the wife the cost of purchasing the folding camper should be included in this years holiday buget - still a cheap option belive me

Jezg

ps 2 x 15yr boys 1 x 9yr women ( i mean girl i think) and the good wife

If your gonna get off ferry at 4am(French time-an hour ahead of uk)& go for 2-3 hours there wont be a rest of the night-campsite receptions normally open at 7-8am so you can pitch up & sleep in comfort & saftey--you could park in Calais docks-which is what caravans & motorhomes do-but dunno if thats practical in a folding camper-I wouldnt advise stoppin in a motorway services or rest area--

Every day should be a holiday!

There are two parking areas on is Council on street parking and the other is the Harbour Trusts car park. I would consider the trust car park appropriate probably best for you as there will be less in the way of passing pedestrial traffic. Click link and if in doubt about folding camper call the Council - I dont think it will be a problem tho.

We are heading to Champagne-Ardennes on July 2 crossing.

We've stopped at the Aire Baie du Somme, near Abbeville, everytime we've crossed late in the day. Its about hour and half from Calais. My kids love it - there are some unbelievably huge fish in the little canals near the stopover areas that we always go to feed. The stopover areas are very quiet, but its popular.

We've never stopped at the harbour itself - where is the designated parking?  We've never seen any signs for it, how do you find it?  We are crossing mid-day this time, but might go for the cheaper night time crossing again next year, so I'd like to know that.  Is it noisy, or can you get some rest?
