I guess driving through the middle was a mad idea - just seems so easy on the maps!  The A28 route will cut out Paris all together but it looks like you'll still have to get through Rouen - they seem to have forgotten to build the motorway round it!

I drove through Rouen 2 weeks ago - it was very easy.   It was on Bastille Day though so traffic was very light, but basically, the road is a dual carriageway throughout, and not difficult to navigate.   I would guess that it could get busy in rush hours, but it was an easy drive.
