Hi all,

This will be our third year camping in France but this year we are taking a small 4'x3' trailer. I'm really enquiring about trailer security. Do I need to secure the trailer to a tree at the campsite so that it doesn't wander off? Also has anyone had any issues with trialers disappearing when attached to an unattended car? If so, what do you do differently now?

Derek

Depending on the hitch type some can have a padlock applied locking the hitch weather it is hitched to a car or not. The trailer we had had this option and We always used a long padlock as extra security whilst on the car too.

Never had a trailer go walkabout so can't help with that

We take our trailer and so far have had no problems, we usually stop overnight at a cheapish chain hotel with a decent sized car park and use a steel cable and padlock to tie the trailer to the car plus a wheel clamp on the most visible side of the trailer. We also have a ABS plastic lid for the trailer with locking catches, though to be honest they wouldn't stop even a half-dermined thief, but I like to think it might put off an oppotunist. Also if you take a few security measures then maybe the insurance co wouldn't accuse you of negligence if you did have to claim (well maybe!)

All the best,

John.
