Novice to camping abroad, going away August to SOFrance with car / tent and am worried that all the campsites ask for reservations. Thing is we don't want to pre-book and would like to know is it easy enough to turn up and find a pitch even if its a more basic site ?
Any help appreciated
PS. going to cap d'agde region

Thanks Stuart, Jo & Louis May, we are in france 6/08 for 2 wks but will be heading straight to agde region in languedoc, Is this an area you would have info on ?
We can't help you yet --- but we are planning to take the RV down for a couple of weeks later in the year --- for our holiday --- yes campsite owners do need a holiday
I will be interested to know how you get on.

You don't say where in the South of France you want to go. Do you want the be on a beach side site, if so booking would, I expect, be needed. Inland it might not be such a problem.
We're also going to South of France, to Perpignan area. This is the first time we've been to the South of France, have been other areas but have always booked as we go the main 2 weeks in the holidays. In our experience campsites are usually fully booked during this time, perhaps as mentioned before, somewhere not so near the beach may have vacancies. Also depends what facilities you would like, as we always go to a site with a pool and these tend to get booked up for the main hols too. Good luck, hope you have a fab holiday.

thanks David and Jo for the advice, we do want beach area if possible but we want to be free to move from site to site and different areas so pre-booking is not an option if you have to pay a large deposit, does anyone know if any sites will pre-book without deposit ?. We will head to Agde area first then make our way around to northern Spain. Any further info appreciated. Cheers Guys. G.

Large all facilities sites may be rather full, but smaller sites usually are no problem. Especially the munucipal sites, as they are more basic, but of good quality (and cheap).
the time of arrival may be of importance. Until 4 or 5 oçlock normally there will be space, after that at around 6 or later some sites may be full. Many french campers have a habit of arriving late. If you lokk for a site on time, in general there will be no problem.
Of course, if you bring a cell phone you can phone ahead during the journey, if you expect to arrive a bit late.
Yes it very nearly did! very scary indeed,it came over from Puget almost into Holiday Green carpark. Not many vans damaged though,I think only 3 in total.we were evacuated up to Bagnols for about 10 hours.
where are you going ?we will be back at HG end of August for 3 weeks and cant wait!
I agree with wlee, if you move sites and stop early afternoon, you can pick up that days vacated pitches before the evening rush. Most sites have people leaving every day. We have never booked a site, and used to regularly go to the bigger popular sites in France in August during school holidays, we always got on. Now we are low season campers, and in June and September some sites are pretty lonely places to stop at!!
