I am taking my family to France in 5 weeks but at the moment all we have booked is the ferry.

I don't know what to about booking campsites before we go. We would like to go to the south of France for a few days then make out way back up France via the west coast.

Can anyone give me advise what to do.

There are millions on the web but book now as you will be in the school holidays.

i did that in may

spent 6 days driving, your better to pick a place and spend a few days, and book it. do 3 or 4 sites in 2 weeks, or you will be driving for most of your holiday.

its not a lot of fun, driving for 6 hrs a day.

France has been experiencing a drought and heatwave, and whilst we were there in June, the tv news showed pics of forest fires in the Landes (West coast). If the heatwave persists, any site from Calais south with a pool should be fine!!

Hello, just a warning about Alan Rogers guides - if you pick a site try and get feedback from here too. We have used the Alan Rogers book and last year felt completely mislead. The site was quiet according to the guide (they don't tell you which month they went in); we found it cramped, lacking in shade and drainage (pitch flooded in the rain) and the noise was constant. I don't think that any aspect of this site warranted a recommendation or inclusion in the guide (don't worry it was in the east of France).

Having said that we also picked Camping Du Jard in La Tranche in the Vendee from Alan Rogers and that was excellent. Just to be careful and seek honest advice from campers on here too! Hope your holiday is great!

We have decided to spend 2 weeks in Scotland now as we just worked out that its going to cost too much.

We are looking at the west coast of Scotland near to the coast.

Scotland over France???? You'll be eaten alive by midges and battered by the atlantic storms!  Never again!  I love Scotland but would never go midsummer again. 

Why not stick to plan A but not go too far from Calais, or wherever you are going to?  You can find great sites with pools that aren't too expensive.  And think of the wine!!!!!  Can't buy fabulous wine for £1 a bottle in or less in Scotland.
