Hi All,

We are travelling to south of france (coastal and inland) in august and I was wondering if it is necessary to take sleeping bags or would sleeping bag liners suffice?

Space is at a very tight premium and I would prefer not to take them if I'm being honest.  Any guidance is appreciated and preferably someone with some experience could shed some light on the subject!?

Hi Chris,

this could get confusing, as we already have a most venerable member who goes by this name! Still, welcome to UKCS!

In answer to your question, the answer's yes & no! The South of France can be very hot & humid, but can also be very cool at night. We've had it both ways! We take the sleeping bag liners, you know, the fleece ones? And a sheet. Sorry to be so vague, but you really can't rely on the weather anywhere these days!

We take sleeping bags with full-length zips, so that you can use them like a duvet or get inside if it gets a bit too chilly.  Silk liners are quite nice when it's hot.

Chris

Last yr went northern italy - same climate really and found some nights v humid but other nights a real gale blew up (I've experienced this also on the cote d'azur in the past). I didn't take a sleeping bag and really regretted it, better to be safe I think. This yr I am going to South of France in August and have purchased a light Vango sleeping bag ideal for summer - really reasonable, about £15

Touring around Provence and Cote d'azur. The reason I ask the question is we are going in a Mazda MX-5 and the boot is miniscule, we are at a real premium for space!!

I was hoping we would just get away with liners. I understand you lose most of your heat through the floor. We will have a lilo (it just fits on the back shelf!) - will this make a difference??

I am toying with a couple of liners and a blanket in a stuff sack!
