Hi

I have also decided to take the route through Rouen and to pick up the motorways again at Orleans ( see earlier post relating to routes via Rouen), however after just speaking to a friend who went through Paris on his way south (and got lost for 3 hrs) but went back via east of Paris (lyon -dijon-troyes etc), his comments were that the return was so easy-motorways all the way, no traffic at all, about 8 hrs south to north (car only).

So now I'm wondering whether to take this "easy route", it just seems so out the way if your heading for Spain though !

Motorway driving is so easy that it makes it worth while doing the extra miles. The 'aires' (lay-bys) are great to, especially if you avoid the busy restaurant/petrol station ones. The smaller ones have picnic/BBQ areas, and some even have mist-showers that you can walk through to cool off! Would recommend the Rouen/Troyes, etc route too.

Have a look at this thread for a really nice stopping off/picnic/throw-the-kids-in-a-lake-to-cool-off kind of place near Troyes:

If you want to avoid the Périphérique, you may take the Francilienne (coming from the North it starts at Charles the Gaulle airport'), which goes a bit wider around Paris. This one is fully motorways.
