Hi there,

We are off to the Pyrrenees next thursday, but have heard that due to the drought swimming pools are not open, this could be a problem for us as we are nowhere near a beach (although there is a river nearby!) Have tried emailing the campsite but to no avail.  Does anyone know if this is actually the case or just chinese whispers about how bad it is.

Hubby also informs me there is a locust infestation throughout France !!!

No matter what we will have a good time, but would be nice to know for the kids sake if they can have a swim.

Thanks Maggie

Oh dear, locusts and no pool, that is not good.

I emailed the sites we are going to and they said they'd never heard of any ban regarding the pool. But someone posted a link to the French gov site with the areas where pools are banned, not all of France was affected. I'll see if I can find it again.

The ban is on filling private pools - not affecting campsites.  It mainly affects the area of the Landes, some of the Vendee and Southern Brittany.  Campsite pools are not affected.  My son is working in Argeles and nowhere there is affected, indeed their rainfall has been higher than normal this year.  I expect this applies to much of the Pyrenees too as Argeles is at the eastern end of the Pyrenees and what rain there is usually comes from the West.

The French are pragmatic and don't do anything which will affect their tourist industry - however, I suppose if the drought got much worse then it might start to affect campsites too.

Just returned from 3 weeks touring France and there were no problems with swimming pools anywhere either on sites or private as far as we could see. Anyway didn't spot one locust! and we have done 3000 miles. Hope that puts your mind at rest. Only problem we had was a flash thunderstorm that rained hail the size of golf balls and dinted all over the roof of our 4 week old caravan!

I am sure that you will not find locusts in France, There are many other forms of insects that bite but surely not locusts!
