Dear all, we are off on our way to the Sunny Dordougne for 2 glorious weeks!!!  This is our first time under canvas (Had a great Renault camper before but its tooooooo old!)  Firstly, can you suggest anywhere to stay on the way down, about half way?  We don't want to do all the driving on the first day as we have a 6 year old that will drive us nuts!!!  So a nice site about half way would be good......

Secondly (oh so cheecky, two questions in one!)  What sights should we see??? Anything we should not miss!!!

Thanks You helpful people!

There is a large site at Chateauroux - just over half way.  Near a large lake and the site is full of trees and has a small stream (fenced off) running along the side.

We were in the Dordogne for 12 days in May.  Plenty of pretty villages to visit.  Don't miss the Wednesday and Saturday market in Sarlat - maybe a bit touristy but well worth a visit.  Have a look on internet - just search for Dordogne and plenty of places should come up.  We stayed at Soleil Plage near Sarlat - large campsite by the Dordorgne.  It was pretty quiet in May but I believe there would be lots of activities for kids in the summer.  Loads of other campsites to choose from though.  Have fun

Agree with Triss about Sarlat, not to be missed. Rocamador is another interesting place to visit as are the fortified towns like Domme.

Hi RAIN - we stayed at Camping Bel Ombrage last year (about 10k outside Sarlat).  Loads and loads to do and it all depends what you like really.  Visit Chateaux Castenaud - great medieval castle with displays, recreations of knights fighting ans superb views over the Dordogne.  Chateaux Beynac is another one worth visiting.  It is also worth visiting Roque St Christopher - the site of a cliff/cave village that was lived in until start of 1900's.  You should also do the markets in Sarlat.  Don't forget the prehistoric caves at Lascaux plus many others that are available.  You may also wish to sail down the Dordogne on a tourist boat or do some canoing as well.  Perhaps visit Domme - a pretty Bastide village.  Further to the west toward Bergerac are some delightful villages and towns - Monflanquin (I think spelt like this) springs to mind, as well as the vinyards.  Further afield Rocamadour is well worth a visit.  Wherever you go enjoy!

We are back to same area this August for 2 weeks to finish off seeing the sites we didn't get to see in 04.

We had a fantastic afternoon canoeing on the Dordogne ,much preferred it to the boat trip . Also brilliant caves -Gouffre de Padirac(or words to that effect!) a big hole in the ground with an underground lake that you are taken on a boat on - combine with Rocamadour for a really good day out.
