Just spent two weeks here in the Landes area of France. Its a long way to go but a fantastic lakeside campsite with great facilities, swimming pools, shop, bar, restaurant and so on. It's just outside the village of Azur and is less than 30 mins from Biarritz and Bayonne. Great beaches nearby for surfing.
There were loads of folks on repeat visits which is a sure sign of a good site - the couple opposite us were back for their 16th year!

Site is called Camping La Paillotte (http://www.paillotte.com/gb.html) . It is on the north edge of Lac Soustons just outside the village of Azur. There is a camping municipal further round the shore which is a bit more basic. The lake is warm and shallow and ideal for kids. The Landes area is great and there's a huge amount to do for day trips and so on
We started our French camping trips in Brittany, then the Vendee and have gradually moved south in search of the sun. It's a lot further to go but worth it when you get there.
Like the outfit - we bought an Erde 142 this year and have it loaded to the top with camping gear and 4 bikes on a modified rack - couldn't be bothered to fork out the cash for the Erde rack. Bought a spare wheel in LeClerc in Soustons for €55 - Halfords wanted £60 here for the same thing!
hi to bubba or anyone else who has been to la paillotte recently. we are going in a couple of weeks so it was really good to read your review-thanks. can you tell me if they enforce the swimming trunk rule there ie swimming trunks only - no shorts style - as I have a 14yr old who really isn't keen on skimpy trunks!
Swimming trunks rule was not really enforced. There were a number of folk wearing shorts and even members of staff didn't seem to go in for the speedo look. Apparently the "teenager house" just off site is the place to be for the youngsters - it runs from 11pm to 3am!
Hope you enjoy your stay - swim across the corner of the lake and hire a kayak from the sailing school to explore the creeks around the edge of the lake - great fun. There were lots of water chestnuts about when we were there - these are nasty things about the size of a normal chestnut but with 4 big vicious spikes. They tend to wash up around the edge of the lake so take some kind of water shoes for the kids. Are you camping, caravanning or Keycamping?

we have booked through eurocamp independent and taking our own tent, staying a week in the dordogne first then a week at la paillotte and back via bilboa. thanks for all your info, will get some shoes sorted out before we go.
We were just recently in Gironde at Camping La Foret, Dune de Pyla, and love the Atlantic Coast. Curious to know how you got there - did you drive? Only ask because we're in South Aberdeenshire and the distance puts us off travelling - especially with the kids. We managed to go this time by air from Birmingham - with our own large tent! It's a bit of a struggle with the baggage allowance but certainly possible.
We camp independently and take the ferry from Rosyth to Zeebrugge and drive down through France with an overnight stop near Poitiers where my father stays. We used to drive down to Portsmouth and take the channel crossings but the drive back up the UK was a depressing way to end the holiday. With the Rosyth ferry getting in at 11 we're back home for lunch!
At first glance it does not appear to be the cheapest option but last year we camped with friends in the Auvergne. They drove from home and took the Dover crossing. They had to take 3 overnight stops and when you add those in the difference was only about £50 between us. Driving on the continent is definitely easier and more relaxing than driving in the UK and the ferry crossing has become part of the holiday.
