Am going camping to the dordogne -one week and the south west(soustons lake) the next week. Can anybody please advise and hopefully prevent me from overpacking. Will we need any warm clothing, whats the least we should take- Off next week, always take too much in this country so I'm trying to gauge how hot or cool it could be(hopefully not cool at all!) Has anyone just come back from either of these area's ?What was the situation with locusts, have you come across any of the areas that were hit?

We just have returned from 3 weeks in france including the Loire the Lot and The Alps. Took shorts t shirts and one sweatshirt! which I wore on a night if it was cooler- not very often. make your pile of clothes then 1/2 it! we brought loads of clean clothes back. To be honest you wear a the same pair of shorts for 2 or 3 days and just have clean t shirts. Most of the time we just wore swimming gear underneath!

PS Didn't see one locust- think this is a bit of a myth! I think there are locusts in Leige in Africa at the moment I think that is where the confusion has happened as it has a French sounding name!

Yep same here. Only time we needed warm clothing was at night as we like to sit outside until pretty late. Tend to keep BBQ burning as a nice warm focal point. Usual rule of thumb the hotter and clearer the skies during the day the cooler the nights are likely to be. A pair of jogging trousers and a fleece should do the trick. In fact I wore my walking trousers a lot - the ones that unzip in to shorts - so I could just zip on the lower legs if I felt a bit chilly around the swonicles ;-)

Just returned from 10 days in Brittany. First few days we had torrential rain and showers, could not believe it!!

Weather warm but wet-so take light rain gear, just in case.Only one evening did I wear a fleece.Hopefully you won't need it!

Have a fab holiday.

I am heading to Vendee region tomorrow(Wheeeeeeeee) and having been to the region for the last 3 years in August, found that you might need a sweater for the very ocasional night that it is cool, I think in 3 weeks I have only had to wear a sweater once, and that was late in the evening. I will bring a pair of long lants too, just in casee, but otherwise its shorts all the way (I hope!)

Statistically August is the warmest and dryest month of the year in France!

I would agree with the need to light rain gear, just in case.

The only sound you hear at night are crickets, but I have yet to see one!

Enjoy your holidays.

Joe

Did see a lot of grasshoppers in on field near a vineyard in Burgundy when winetasting (mmmmm!) but no locusts!

Pack one jumper for any cooler nights - but shorts/ t shirts/ dresses / vest tops wiull see you through.

We usually take enough clothes for about 8 days when going away for about 2 weeks and wash some half way through the holiday. It did take us 2 days to dry them in Brittany 2 years ago as it was so humid depsite daytime temps of about 35C - however it will probably not be quite as hot as that.

The big green thingy would have been a cricket. They grow huge out here, and the racket they make in the fields all around us at dusk is deafening!
