If you have a look at the viaMichelin website you can go to their excellent route planner, which gives directions, speed camera locations and toll costs for journeys. If you tow a caravan, tolls are about 50% more than for a car.
You can also use that website to keep an eye on the 5 day weather forecast before you leave.
We would always choose the west coast for a holiday, and are going there in Sept too. The weather is great, and the beaches fantastic for surfing. Usually miles of free parking too, which is a bonus if you are on a budget and want to park at a beach all day. I can't comment on the nightlife, but those surfers must party somewhere, surely!!
Have you looked at www.campingcard.com for deals on site fees?

Hi there
just got back tonight from Biscarrosse South West France , and the weather has been warm 25 degrees but plenty of cloud. next year i will be going to the French Med to hopefully garrantee the sunshineand not the clouds, even so i enjoyed the holiday .
