I think it depends what you're buying.  If you want to buy Australian "branded" wine or similiar then it may not be much cheaper in France.  If you're happy to buy French regional wine you can buy some really good wine at very good prices.  I'm quite fussy about the white wine I drink and wouldn't buy "cheap plonk" in the UK but buying reasonably priced wine in france gets you a really good product. 

We brought back quite a lot of wine boxes that we paid around 10 - 15 euros for 4 litres of wine.  Can't beat it here!

The only place I saw beer much cheaper was in the Calais Cash & Carrys - regional supermarkets were pretty much on a par with the offers at UK supermarkets.

Local wine, however, is a different matter. You can pick up some pretty decent stuff for a couple of quid, although we did tend to avoid the really cheap stuff

I didn't check the spirits
