Evening all, I am more of a lurker than a poster, but I could do with some advice from you all.

We are travelling down to the South of France, (Vias - Californie Plage) and have been looking up routes, we have been given several alternatives, e.g. via Chartres and via Le Mans.  We are having a stop off at Clermont Ferrand so it must be via there.

Has anyone got any tips and advice.

Thanks :)

If you are going via Clermont then its the A75 which is free south of Clermont, except of course the new bridge at Millau where you pay a toll. When we go down to the Med we tend to go via Lyon, right down the centre of France but that would not be much use given where you want to stop en route.

Check out this website. It was recommended when I had to navigate around Paris. Used the route they suggested and had no problems.

We have just returned from a two week to Spain. Camping in France enroute. I drove via Le Mans and Carcassonne as I didn't fancy tackling Paris.  I used:

http://www.mappy.com

Their directions showed toll roads and prices, speed cameras, amount of fuel, times and distances. I printed off express and non-express directions but mainly used their non-express routes in France. It made the journey more interesting and using a map that pin-pointed campsites, we were able to divert slightly off the route to find the Municipal campsites. These were very clean, basic sites with hot water ranging from 9 to 15 euros for two adults and two children.

ps. An in-car DVD player stops the 'are we there yet?' completely!
