I've been alarmed to read reports on here recently of bad experiences on sites which seem to read well on paper, so was wondering if anyone could advise on how to find a good site in Spain for next summer.

We're looking for a good site for young families (kids will be 11, 9 and 7), without hoards of teenagers (any nationality!). Needs to have good beach access (preferably direct), pool etc, clean facilities and pitches as large as possible. Not too big (couple of hundred pitches ideal). Not too far into Spain - Saint Pere Pescador (?)/ Estartit area - to minimise travelling from UK.

Does anyone have personal experience or advice on where to find info? Thanks.

It depends when you are going. If you want to avoid lots of teens it's best not to go in August. Spanish pitches tend to be on the smaller size as well

The best guides I have found are http://www.alanrogers.com/ar2005/NavPages/Home.shtml This will also tell you if tour operators use the site. They inspect every site and give honest reviews Also try http://www.vayacamping.net/en/ This site has direct links to some of the sites most of which have English translations

I used this site    http://www.via-camping.com, and the AA Europe site book and Alan Rodgers to look about.  Also you can get a map and details of all campsites from the Spanish tourist board in the UK - no review though but they do show some basic details and more importantly where sites exist.

In the end we just travelled, looked and found - and it was August and we stayed at Cambrils.  I doubt the site would suit you fully, there were lots of groups of young blokes (mostly spanish and french) but they were really quite well behaved.  We put our tent up on the unmarked site, but there was also set pitches which were quite small.  The restuarant and bar was fine - nice food etc, pool very clean with attentive lifeguard.  There was entertainment but we didn't get involved and washing up area only had cold water. Apart from that sea was walkable in a few minutes and there was a decent shop.  If you need site translation on web sites try babelfish.com.

We also stayed at one actually in the AA book on the western side of Spain, that put us on a small pitch at the back - the porch couldn't be put out and we were just off a sharp drop but we sort of managed. They seem to reserve the best for caravans. That was just one night though so we don't have much experience to go on.

Good luck on your search

JK

Stayed at Torre De Sol Cambrills, great site, direct access to beach, picked our own pitch.  Nice area, but a lot of driving to get there.
