Hi phil, i used the N roads ( A roads in england ) when i was in france, nothing like our roads here.you will also find lots of camp sites in most of the big towns, for a stopover. you will see a lot more going that way as well. toll roads , well its like our motorways, not a lot to do but watch the roads.

Hi there, we have just come back from the Dordogne, went with the Toll roads there and made the mistake of using the N roads on the way back........lots of lorries to get stuck behind, yep you do get to see the little towns but you will take much much longer to get where you are going.  The tolls were very reasonable, only cost us about £30 to get to the Dordogne but we probablt spent ovber that in petrol on the way back.  I definatley would only use Tolls roads in the furture!!!

Last year we used the toll roads on our way to the Mediterranean coast and started our journey back on the N roads.  That was a BIG mistake as it took us forever to go a very tiny distance because of the heavy traffic using the N roads and also the fact that they seem to go through every tiny little village where you have to slow down to 30mph.

This year we used toll roads in both directions and it was great.  We encountered very little traffic, never had to slow down below 70mph and got to our destination and back without feeling extremely tired.

I agree that the toll roads are expensive and you do miss out on the scenery and quaint villages but if you want to get somewhere with the least possible delay and difficulty, I would use the toll roads every time.

hi i forgot to say we were on holiday touring france, but with the motorhome, and thats a small one, only 17',

well i never had a real problem in may and we had  to go to to about 4 hrs from spain for our last stop.

at 60mph or less it was great, most times we had an empty road on the N roads. not sure what its like this time of the year. but i thought its even better than our A roads.

ok you have to go into towns and stuff, thats what we wanted to see, france.

never had a any real problems with the roads, in 3 weeks.

and you can get cheaper fuel in the local supermarkets, its a lot less than on the toll roads.

we paid .93 ltr in the supermarkets. about 1.07 to 1.10ltr on the toll roads( motorways)

Hi Phil, Have a look at:  www.mappy.com   It quoted us about 73 euros for tolls from Dunkirk to Torrevieja, via Le Mans (approx 43 euros on tolls in Spain). We used the non-toll roads in France, so that we could see more towns/villages and have easier access to the municipal campsites. It even told us how much diesel we would use, which was spot on. Would recommend using the toll roads going over the border. Queued for four hours on the non-toll road going down, but straight through on the toll road on our return.
