Hi

I pick up our first Trailer Tent at the end of this month, so starting to think where we can go next year for our main hols.

For the last 3 years we have gone to Pentewan in Cornwall and stayed in a static. I find this site hard to beat as it has a perfect location (on the beach) and the kids always seem to love (3 boys 8, 6 and 3 months) it - pure relaxation. The intention was to go there in out new Trailer Tent next year and when we had more confidence try venturing abroad.

Already I seem to be feeling more adventurous and am thinking about going over the water. Other than Disneyland Paris my boys have never been abroad, so I thought a trip to France may prove more popular than Pentewan The thing is - where to go. As this will be our first major experience with TT, I would want to make sure that everyone was impressed.

So essentially what I am looking for is:

- somewhere close to sandy beach (very close preferable)
- activities for young children (but not overrun with kids)
- good sized pitches to fit my Sunseeker TT on (6.5m x 4.5m)
- within 2 hour drive of ferry port (this should really be main point)
- guaranteed sunshine and free wine throughout stay (well you've got to ask)

Your help, advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

I'd love to say come here to the Loire, but the only beaches we have are on our local lakes!

I'd recommend two sites to you, possibly three. They're all reviwed in my profile if you want to look. They are: L'Anse du Brick near Cherbourg, La Palmyre at Royan (Vendee) poss. a bit too far for you, or the site where my daughter's currently holidaying with my mates while we slave here! That's near Caen, called Cote du Nacre.

Hi Paul!-clic here for a campsite guide to France-If you want to go Dover/Calais just head down the north coast of France 50 odd miles to places like Berck-sur-mer, nice seaside resorts with sandy beaches--dont expect it to be as pretty as Cornwall tho-if you want that you will have to go a lot further to Brittany, unless you take a longer ferry route ie Portsmouth/St Malo--which drops you right into Brittany but very expensive crossing compared with Dov/Cal---

We went this year to Camping Penboch near Vannes in Brittany.  It was 2.5 hr drive from St Malo.  We went Brittany Ferries and booked reclining seats and then upgraded on the boat to a cabin for the extortionate sum of £10 !!!!!!

Penboch is a field width away from a beach with calm water ideal for littlies.  The site had a small shop, bar/cafe.  Shady play area.  Nice pool with slides and baby pool.

Our TT is also large if we take 2 awnings and the pitch was plenty big enough.

Camping Penboch is on this site somewhere if you search for Penboch.  In fact we have recommended it to freinds and they are hoping to book for next year.  Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

We went to Les Pres Verts nr Concarneau - nearest ferry place was Roscoff.  Direct access to almost private beach - only access to it from the site or via the coastal path, quiet site - pool, table tennis area, small shop. My kids (10, 8 and 5) were more than happy on the beach, looking in the rock pools or playing with their new friends - they do have a website - thinks its www.lespresverts.fr (or similar anyway!)

We stayed at a real gem of a site in Albert in the middle of the Somme. Fantastic if you have interests in the WW1 (Which we do) Warden is a real character. Site is very friendly, next to a river and a lake for fishing in.

It's only downfall is a nearby bar which plays music from about midnight (Yes -  FROM midnght) to about 3am, but it is easily ignored and I am a light sleeper.

Called Camping Municipal Du Vellodrome.

If you want guaranteed sunshine you will have to drive down to the Loire valley at least, as northern Brittany and Normandy have a similar climate to Cornwall. It would mean either a long drive from Calais or taking a western channel Xing from Portsmouth,Poole or Plymouth. The cost of these xings at peak periods for a car and trailer tent would be in excess of £500.If you opt to go Dover-Calais it is much cheaper but if you only want a short drive to a campsite you will find that the weather is virtually the same as southern England and nowhere near as pretty as Cornwall.
I still do it but mainly for the "French experience"
Reldas..
