Just been to France with Brittany Ferries and were told that there is a height restriction of 1.82m for a standard car so with roofbox we would have had to pay another £30. Didn't think we'd need roofbox and by the time we thought it might be a good idea to take it, too late - all the space for taller vehicles was taken. Having never travelled on a Brittany ferry, assumed height was pretty crucial, however, when we boarded we could see that there's LOADS of room for a roofbox in the standard garage area and I know it's supply and demand and all that but I feel miffed and wanted to air my grievance!.

I think it depends on how busy they are as to how they fill the cars in, we have just come back from Norway via Fjordline and were packed in like sardines with about 4ins spare above us - there were men, well one poor sod, running round with 3 different hgt sticks checking cars....I know what you mean though its very annoying!!

If they are very busy cars under 1.8m are parked on the upper car deck ,there is definately not room for a roof box on some bigger cars.I think a bigger rip off is the charge for cycle carriers on the back of a vehicle.

I agree, its possible that the level you were on would have been divided in two if the ferry had been busier.

I also agree that the charge for rear cycle carriers is a rip off, as is the Western Channel in general nowadays.

As a regular user of the Cherbourge route now P&O are giving it up and Brittany Ferries have the monopoly .........what is going to hit us next year......I hate to think ...if it gets too expensive then the prospect of leaving a caravan on a Vendee site  and getting a cheap flight to La Rochelle from Southampton..(.1 hour 20 minutes £29 plus tax ..). and hire a car for £20 a day from the airport or buy a local banger to leave there will start to look a good alernative for some .........especially if like me you are retired .I am going for most of September and the caravan is not returning .........third time this year and have paid about a £1000  in ferry fares so far and   most of it to Brittany Ferries .

Not quite a monopoly. Condor Ferries operate a weekend budget caravan service Portsmouth - Cherbourg.
