Hi all,

I'm thinking about going on a camping trip to Southern France as a last minute thing later this month.  Does anyone have any suggestions and/or words of advice?

It's got to be somewhere nice and clean and safe but not be overpriced as we're on a very tight budget!  Preferably somewhere wher e they speak mostly English is a bonus but not essential.

Cheers

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Southern France is a wide notion. Check at www.campingfrance.com and choose English. Less stars is cheaper. Municipals are good, clean and cheap, sometimes very cheap. Check the opening seasons as many close half or end of september. There also is a group of sites closing end of november. Seaside campsites and some mountain campsites are open longer (overwintering at the mediterranean or wintersport) or the year around.
The site contains over 10,000 campsites, so you should be able to find enough sites. The Dutch version of the site also contains reviews, the french and english versions unfortunately don't.

From 3 stars on speaking two foreign languages at the reception is obligatory. On two stars sites French only is possible, but certainly not a rule. Also in France more and more people speak a bit of English.

I don't know of any campsite that is not safe. It's staying overnight at certain aires on the motorways that bring about a certain risk in certain areas, not the campsites.

Go here: http://www.provence-campings.com/frejus/etoile-argens/indexuk.htm they're open till the end of this month.

Here's my review of it: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=5427  They are very nice people. There were one or two Dutch staff who spoke proper English (like we do) and I guess the rest of them could too. Don't worry about the language, just smile and be polite (I'm sure you will!) and that will get you a long way. Anyway, once you're checked in, all the interaction you need is to buy a croissant in the morning and a beer at night. They'll figure out what you mean

I've never felt unsafe on a French campsite in my life and this one had pretty good security as far as I could tell.

You're in a 3-person tent? One of their half-size pitches will be more than enough at 15 Euros a night.
