We are thinking about next years holiday (aren’t we all!) and are considering camping outside Britain for the first time, perhaps close to the Atlantic coast of France, probably Brittany. I’ve searched through campingfrance.com and the campsite reviews on here but all the sites mentioned sound like theme parks with camping areas. If there are such things, can anyone suggest sites that are “peaceful” in July but with good utilities? There are three of us including our four-year-old daughter but our tent is an 8-berth Campus so size might be a problem.

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi John,

we may not fit the bill as far as being close to the sea, but if peace and quiet is what you're after, then give us a try? Size isn't a problem either (oo-er missis), we've had some pretty large units on here this summer and we've coped admirably without being crammed in! We're in a very rural area of France called the Loire Valley. We're surrounded by gorgeous countryside, forest trails, chateaus, the mighty Loire for boating trips, birdwatching etc. Markets are held locally throughout the week. Vineyards offering good prices, free 'degustation' (tasting), apple orchards.....

The area is virtually untouched by time, the roads are quiet even in July/August! I walked the 5 miles around our lane the other Monday morning, and was passed by only THREE cars!

New for next season will be a beautiful pool to relax by.

One thing though, we're getting pretty full for July/August next year already, we've had quite a few repeat bookings from our very first season in business, so that must say something?

Hope this helps?

Hi John, there are loads of beautiful camp sites in France, including Floydfan's which looks great.  We borrowed a european camp site book from a friend who belongs to the Caravan Club, I think you can buy ones like the Michelin guide - have a look in a good bookshop/W H Smith.  Not all the smaller less commercial sites have websites or email.  Use the guidebooks to narrow down your search and then write off to half a dozen or so for brochures.

We stayed on a great site in Brittany with about 150 pitches, good clean facilities, outdoor swimming pool, children's play area and boule court, two minutes walk to the sea.  There was no shop on site, but they had fresh bread and croissants delivered daily, pizza van one evening a week, it was very peaceful and quiet, just about everyone was in bed by 10.30 pm.  There are loads of campsites like this throughout France, you just need to know where to look to find the details.

Camping de la Filature in the Auvergne region is fab, not a coastal holiday but very beautiful with rivers, gorges and lakes.  Oh and not forgetting cable cars and extinct volcanoes too!

The owner is a fab cook and we had dinner each night for 20 euros which was our pitch, car, tent, 2 peeps and dinner for 2 - absolute bargain.

When I say dinner, I mean dinner too.  Proper home cooked food, duck, chicken, trout, lamb, steak, the works.

Thanks for the replies; this is my first post on this forum, some good helpful pointers there. We were thinking of one week inland followed by two on the coast, so we had already thought about the Loire valley Stu (nothing to do with its vineyards of course!). My mouth was watering just reading Snowy’s post.
Tessa, what was the name of your Brittany camp site? It sounds like just what we are looking for.

If you are searching on campingfrance.com, keep in mind: the fewer stars the more queuit the campsite. The more stars, more singin and dancin.
You can select how many stars you want the search to be effected. Don't pick any number of stars or take two stars to search on. You wil get all sites from the number of stars on.

Municipals are mostly two and three stars, and are normally very clean, do have a washing machine etc. If three stars mostly a small swimming pool. Check that site again, now from this point of view. Municipals always have that word indicated in the name of the campsite.

Yan, it was called Camping de l'ocean. They're not on email and don't have a website, although I think they're listed on some of the French websites.

The address is - Camping de L'Ocean, Raguenes, 29920 Nevez, France.  It's near Concarneau on the south coast of Brittany.
