Can anyone help - we are thinking about Italy for next year (Own tent/equipment) and we have heard you can get the ferry over mainland Europe then put car + ourselves on a train to save the long drive? Anyone done this?
Also any site recommendations - 2 children (5&7) - would prefer smaller with pool etc (not big operators on site) etc
Thanks in advance!

There are 2 small places on lake Iseo, our favourites: camping Iseo and camping Sassabanek. But, since you're driving all the way down to Italy, you may want to be able to reach something interesting to see with little driving around so the Garda lake might be a better choice. There are gazillions of places around the lake so the choice is yours. I have also found (but never been there yet) a very interesting camping near Venice (Venezia), with large grass pitches and giant adventure pool with water slides, can't remember the name but can look it up for you. In the meanwhile you can give a look at here

Nope I have never put my car on a train. None of my friends has ever done that either, I have friend who drive all the way from Stockholm to Switzerland and Italy and they do that twice a year or so. Why don't you check with the railroad, I'm sure they can help. My rough guess would be that the insurance part would probably be the tricky detail.
If you share the driving you can do it in under 20 hours from London, we do it quite often with two children 6 and 3 get the big bit done over night so the kids are asleep. If you are aiming for the Northern part of Italy it's very easy. That includes stops for dinner etc.
Best of luck

Havent used Motorail since I was about 8 years old so I dont really remember that much about it. As you will see from the website, bookings are closed until December for next year. French trains are generally excellent though Im sure it will be fine. Not aware of any Motorail services which actually run in Italy.
Went on the Motorrail 3 years ago. It costs a lot, but saves on wear and tear on you and the car. No food on the train, so you have to take your own food and drink (plenty of water), but waking up trundling alongside the Med was definitely worth it! We went to Nice and it's an easy drive on the Motorway into Italy.
I drove from La Londe (30Km from St Tropez) to Sunderland in 18 hours last August. I had planned to do it in 2 days but I was making such good time I just kept going (0600 - 2400).
Northern Italy would probably take a couple of hour more.
The train would probably take longer and costs about £600 to Nice on Motorail.
I was driving a Renault Scenic with 3 bikes on the back and a windsurfer on the roof!
