We have a dream  ( don't we all )  we would like to tour New Zealand in a Motorhome. Has anyone done this that could offer some advice.  for example is it cheaper to book your vehicle before you go, or when you arrive ? and are we right in assuming it's best to go 'freelance' than have a company organise things ? and more importantly, when would be the best time to go, as regards the weather.

My daughter is on the New Zealand leg of her 2 years round the world tour look at http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/worldofbintang/round-the-world/1128043380/tpod.html.

They have just hired a spacehip (www.spaceships.tv)  It may not be your ideal vehicle but may give you an idea.

Hi

The camping and caravan club do motorhome holidays to NewZeland, if you go on there website you can get a carefree brochure which has the holidays inside, you dont have to be a member to get the brouchure, and it has a lot of good advice for traveling abroad, inside as well.

We spent our honeymoon touring NZ South Island in a small camper 11 years ago and have been back a few times since - my OH is a Kiwi. I would think you'd get the best price booking directly with an independant NZ co (over the 'net), unless you can find a good package including the flight.

However if we went touring again we probably wouldn't hire a motorhome, just a car and we'd stay at the campsites, but in cabins which come in various grades (from little more than a shed with bunks where you use the campsite facilities as you would if you were in a tent up to comfortable motel style units with all facilities for cooking and washing). Usually a campsite has a selection of different grade cabins on offer.

In our experience Top Ten group of holiday parks are a good group of sites (there is more than 10 in the group!)

All the best,

Hi Sweet

We toured the South Island 3 yrs ago and thought about hiring a motorhome, but decided to hire a car instead and did as John has mentioned, staying in cabins. The motorhomes are quite expensive to hire and you still have to book into a caravan park.I still love the idea of hiring one though!

We had a fantastic time and drove right around the island in about 3 wks.We went in October just after the ski season had ended and we had lovely weather. If you want hotter weather,I would probably go anywhere between December and March. It,s a very beautiful place and we plan to go to the North Island next time.

We didn,t book anything through a travel agent. We just looked up places on the net and the only accomodation that we booked was for our first week there.

Queenstown is really beautiful...we just loved it there. We went on a "Funyaks tour" which was an all day trip...which consisted of a 90 minute jet boat ride up the Dart river (where they filmed Lord Of The Rings) and then we all got into inflatable Kayaks and paddled back down the river and stopped halfway in a magical spot where they had lunch ready for us (the scenery was just spectacular....words can,t describe it) It was a day to remember.

Whatever you decide to do, I,m sure you,ll have a fantastic time!

All the best

Mel
