We are looking to take our new  folding camper to the Vendee next year.  Has anyone any suggestion e.g best route to take we are travelling from the Midlands.  Prefer to do a longer crossing not so much driving.  We are looking for some quite sites anywhere om this coast line.  Not with loads of children, been there done that for so many years.  Any suggestions where would be a good stop to break the journey.  Nothing to difficult this is our first time so we don't want to get to lost.  Also is it cheaper to book direct with ferries or someone like caravan and camping club which we are members off.  Any suggestions would be great.

Hi Sandie,

when we've either been crossing to go on holiday in either the Loire, or the Vendee we used the Portsmouth - Le Havre route. It's a long crossing, so gives you plenty of time to sleep, stretch your legs etc. Then the journey from the port to the destination's less tiring.

Since we bought our place here in the Loire Valley, France, we've used the same route for all our journeys as Portsmouth's pretty easy to use as a port, and certainly less trouble to get to than say, Dover.

The western channel crossings are usually quite a bit more expensive than Dover-Calais, etc. though, but less of a drive on this side.

Hi Sandie

We always advise our camper's/guest to use:- http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm

It will even tell you the cost of the toll's.

You need to think long & hard about weighing up the ferry cost to drive time.

As you are looking for a stopover campsite - we DO NOT have a min' stay period. Have a look at our website (link above) or drop us an email.

Hi Sandie,

We went to the Vendee last Summer, it was our first time too we booked through Canvas holidays and used one of their tents. We chose the Portsmouth to Caen Fastcraft and came back via Cherbourg and easily managed the drive to and from Jard Sur Mer which took around 5-6 hours. We travelled from Merseyside approx an hour more than yourselves and just gave ourselves plenty of time to get to Portsmouth (travelled through the night) for a 7.00am crossing we ad a couple of hours sleep at Portsmouth as well as on the crossing.

This year we are taking our own TT and have already booked LD Lines Portsmouth to Le Havre Overnight crossing £440 including cabin thought this was the best deal around for Western crossing.
