Really fancy this part of France for our annual camping trip in Summer 2006.   Has anyone visited this region?   If so, are there things to do for the kids.   We have 3 (who will be 16, 9 and 5 by next Summer).

We went to Golfe de Morbihan, in Brittany,  this year and had a brilliant time - am afraid that the Champagne region will not have so much to keep us amused.

Any opinion gratefully received.

Thanks!

You have Reims to look round---the area is mainly agricultural--do a bit of research--its not really a holiday destination(imho)but most regions of France have something to offer-I suppose its ok if you like quiet rural campsites & bike riding etc --but your kids may find it boring-

Thanks for that Billy - it's kind of what I've expected to be honest.

Do you have any suggestions for another region in France that is good for a two-week camping trip, outside of Brittany?

We do want to go back to Brittany again - we loved it - but fancy going somewhere else next year.   We've done Normandy and Pas de Calais (didn't rate it there), and pretty much 'did' Normandy when we were there.

Thanks for your help.

Hi!--if you want an inland place--you could try the Ardeche area-nr Ales-north of Nimes-this is just north of the med sea so v hot in mid summer-mountainous area, with river gorges-quite spectacular-good for canoeing & cycling(if you are fit)plenty of campsites-but inland France imho-is good if you like scenery & genrally chillin out & communing with nature--if your kids want big swimming pools & organized activties-you need to be near the sea-forget the med coast imho-its not that good & a bit far for 2 weeks(weathers good tho)-which really-leaves you the west coast from Brittany-down-we go on the coast in the Gironde-nr Bordeaux-long sandy beaches-loads of campsites to suit all tastes---look at franceguide & this will give you some ideas-

Thanks will do some investigation.

We are not really into organised activities, and try and stay away from large predominately British frequented sites - as long as the area has historic towns and castles/chateau, a few nice places to visit, and reasonable weather we are happy.

Cheers!

Reims to me came across as a rather cool (=cold) city, bit sterile. The area is mainly vines, not really much for kids, but it always depends on the specific place where you get. I have been surprised about the preferences of my kids, sometimes totally different of what I expected.

It depends very much on what your kids like. Some prefer activities on the campsite, other want to go around. Some areas have caves where you can crawl around in or canyoning (e.g. Vercors). The Dordogne has a large variety of activities (canoe.kayak, swimming in the river, castles, caves, walks etc), several old towns (Sarlat, Domme, Uzerche, Rocamadour, Roc cageac etc) and types of campsites, so would probably qualify. Auvergne is great for mountain walks, if they like that, but just a few historic towns.
Rivers like the Tarn also often attract kids.
The Pyrennees is a beautiful mountainregion, also with a variety of activities, dpending on where exactly you go.
Normanide if they like war-like stuff (old bunkers, fortifications, beaches etc.).
There is much more, just look around at the net. The French tourist websites are good.

Grumunkin..

you could always come to the Loire Valley? Plenty to do/see in this area! We have a great climate, we have the magic of the Puy du Fou on our doorstep in Cholet, we have the Cadre Noir, the Musee des Blindes (tank museum). Le Mans isn't too far away, then there's Saumur, Tours, Angers for shopping, theatre, nightclubs etc. We have miles of unspoilt country lanes to explore by car or bike. The villages are very friendly, the bars are great fun. The west coast beaches are only a couple of hours drive away, and there's wine tasting and tours to be had on every corner. Not to mention the chateaus...

We were so impressed with the area on holiday last year that we ended up buying our campsite & gites complex here this year!

Have a look at www.loire-gites.com, or see our advert on UKCS at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5318. Don't just take our word for it, read our reviews too. Hope to see you sometime?

We usually try and do a 2 centre holiday when camping, it's not a lot of hassle to pack up and move with most modern tents.  Last year we stayed in the Vendee for 8 days and then moved on to Saumur for a bit of culture (and yes the kids did enjoy the wine tasting!)  Mind you we usually travel mid-late Aug when the sites are quieter and you can take your pick of some prime pitches.  Wasn't so keen on the  Champagne region a couple of years ago but it is interesting and think maybe a bad summer and a dark pitch did nothing to endear us to this spot - we will return!  Sarlat is an area with a lot going for it - interesting sites, water sports etc, can't wait to go back there!
