I've just booked car and caravan, Dover to Calais return for two weeks in August and the price is now down to £125 including the fuel surcharge. There seem to be no price differences for numbers of passengers, times of departure or length and height of van.

Consequently we have paid £4 more than last year (Caravans go Free offer) but got the times that suit us.

I'm well happy since it was £160 a couple of days ago.

Hi Bev and Jon, I sometimes get the feeling that a holiday on the Continent is cheaper than a holiday at home, especially with the ferry and tunnel being so cheap these days. Why not price up both holiday destinations? I think you'll be surprised at the answer. It's often warmer as well!!

Phil.

Last year we waited until May to book for end of June departure and got the return crossing with P&O for £60 which was considerably cheaper than they were charging earlier in the year.

I have just completed a search for prices on 4 routes for us this year 1-15 July with car and trailer and the prices so far are

Norfolk Line Dover - Dunquerque - £149

Speed Ferries - Dover - Boulogne - £88

P&O - Dover - Calais - £150

Seafrance - Dover - Calais - £165.

If last year is anything to go by, out of these crossings, I am expecting Speed Ferries to be sold out soon at the same price as above and the other three will continue to drop in price until the last minute.

I couldn,t agree more Phil, at least from our experience this year.     As money was a little tight we decided on 2 weeks in Cornwall and one in Devon, we chose cheaper Adult sites to keep prices down, but only one day into the holiday the hot weather changed into drizzle and wind on most days. This was almost constant for the 2 weeks, instead of lazing about on the beach we had to tour around looking for better weather,  everywhere had extortionate parking fees, even a snack costs the earth down there. We reckoned the extra we forked out in fuel, meals, parking fees, food shopping etc would probably  have exceeded what a holiday in France would have cost. Needless to say we have booked the ferry and campsite already for next year.

Sorry, I forgot to add, our 20 nights and ferry only come to £376, the site is £14-80/night, making the ferry price very competetive.

Can't agree more. Spent a week in Scarborough and had bad weather in July. Cost a furtune - site fees (£25/night), must have spent over £300 on food, entertainment, parking etc. We love camping in this country but decided whilst suffering a terrible thunderstorm in Scarborough, that next year we would go to France for summer hols. Have booked at Le Chant D'Oiseau for 2 weeks late July for £14/nights. Have not booked ferry yet but looks like we can take car and trailer for around £115 (P&O Dover/Calais). Sounds too good.

We will still camp at Easter and Spring bank week in this country but are looking forward to our summer holiday where we should get much better weather.

Pixie_Hez,

I just checked Speedferries & it's just £50 for a standard vehicle & £88.

Standard is pretty generous and covers our large Estate and top box, the website says "max overall height 1.85 m and overall length 5.0 m"

Of course you could be driving something bigger for all I know?

Liz
