Hi there

has anyone taken a dinghy and outboard motor with them to France. If so do you know if you need to have any sort of permits etc ?

Many Thanks

I've taken my 12ft inflatable and a five horsepower outboard for several years and used it mainly in the Loire valley and on the rivers Sarthe and Mayenne and on some of the large lakes etc in Normandy without any problems.I think it depends on the size of the boat and outboard, anything much bigger than mine and you may need to produce a certificate of competence such as a day skipper's ticket. If you know where you are going then a letter to the Mairie(town hall)asking local rules may be the answer.
I have always used it where larger boats are being used already.
I cant comment on the rules as regards the sea as I have never used it there.
I would suggest that you take out third party ins to be on the safe side as I feel this may be a requirement as is the case on a lot of U.K. waters.

I have never taken a permit for 12ft and 4HP outboard but now you mention it I have never asked the question!

But that is in the sea and no-one ever blinks an eye.

Thanks for the feedback folks.

I have a 3.8m Dinghy with 18HP outboard. From what I have read it looks like 6HP is the limit before you need a permit. Although the site I found said 6CV which I am guessing is the same thing.

Any good recommendations for 3rd party insurance ?

Thanks again - Chris

I have a sports inflatable on  which I have used an old 7hp Johnson twin . These can shift and I would strongly recommend that you get insurance ...I know Salcombe in Devon have an office on the side of the public slipway and you are not permitted to launch without cover.there  it ... may be different in France  but ......without cover in France or any other place ...take a limb off a swimmer with the prop .end up in court and the damages claim could be a telephone number .......not worth the risk .

I'm not sure about dinghy's, but in general also for small boats the French demand a so-called flag-letter, some kind of certificate of nationality. The old type of document (Pleasure craft certificates) issued by touristic organisations at a certain moment were refused and had to be replaced by a real check on ownership. In Holland that became the 'vlaggebrief', some document, with picture of the boat on it and a check on ownership. It is not required for canoes and like and I think not for inflatables, but if it is a boat with outboard, you should check in the UK. Ask your touristic organisation, AA/ADAC and like or maybe the french tourist board.
