Hi

I was just wondering if other people were having problems booking campsites in France for the summer.

We have heard stories that some people just turn up and get places - so we thought we were being organised by trying to book places early in the year.

We have tried several campsites now - only to be told they are fully booked.

We are travelling in peak season ie Last week July 1st week August.

We recently booked on line with Les Ecureuils in St Hilaire de Riez and today got letter through post to say they were fully booked 16/7-19-8

We didn't seem to have this problem last year and just wondered if others were having similar problems

Cheers

We have got our first choice campsite for the same two weeks but we booked it September! Our main school holidays are getting more and more popular its not just the Brits that are booking everything its also the main school holidays for the French, Germans Belgiums and Dutch and camping and caravanning is getting more and more popular with them too!!

We've been taking bookings for this Spring/Summer since last May! We're now fully booked for the main summer holiday (UK), and getting there for June/July, and September too. We're beginning to think we should buy more land!

Hope you get in somewhere!

Some  very good, very nice, campsites in France keep a proportion of pitches which cannot be booked in advance.

If you arrive in an evening many have an overnight stopping place and then you can go into reception at opening time the next day. They will tell you what pitces will be available that day.

We have never booked a campsite before leaving home and relish the novelty of not knowing quite where we will end up.  We have often telephoned sites the day before our arrival to get some idea of the possibiliites.

Even in August we have rarely experienced any problems even in the most popular destinations.  It is a risk though and therefore not for everyone.

Good luck.

we had called a holiday compamy (suncamp i think) and one of the two sites were fully booked, the other had a few places. i then called the caravan club, which we are members and got a place and it was over £150.00 less inc crosing , insurance and site fees, fantastic value and best of all its in july for two weeks,

From the sites I've been looking at, there are plenty of pitches still available. I know last year my brother complained the sites were all booked, but we booked in April for the first 2 weeks of the school summer hols with no problems at all.

Have alook on this site http://www.campingfrance.com/index.jsp?lg=uk

With most of the sites you can check the availabilty online and even book!

Good Luck

Jackie

Depends on the campsite it seems! You make your choice and take your chance I suppose.

We booked on site last year before we left.  It's a very popular place and we wanted a specific pitch.  The ferry crossing was the only thing left to do.  We had forgotten the change in the E111 forms and the cards came through the post - another thought process ticked off.  Travel insurance through the bank.  All set?  Then off we jolly well go!

I got very organised in the Autumn- requested all the usual brochures- surfed the net, narrowed down the area- then stopped! This week decided I should pick up where I left off and you guessed it- all my shortlisted sites are full up!!

Still waiting on a few French campsites to return my email about availability but it is not looking good as our holiday dates cannot be moved.

I have booked up later than Feb before and have been fine- ho hum.

At least we  will have Venice! ( My  anniversary minibreak was relatively easy to sort out!)

Thanks Mandy for the offer but it is too far south - and we have our own camper - (which I love - it is one of my happy places) and therefore just need a pitch.

Thanks everyone for the replies (note to self - must be more organised next year) - Hope everyone else gets booked up OK eventually.

Will need to keep looking I guess something will come up - otherwise we will need to try the Municipal Sites if nothing else.
