...with all your talk about cheap ferry deals and the wonderful campsites in France... and honestly I really did only intend to book a week in Cornwall (saving for a new kitchen) but for £45 rtn Dover to Calais (seen on here) for last week in July I just couldn't resist. So I'm happy to say-France, here we come again and I can't wait!!!

You will love it Julie. We go every year. The sites are top notch and you cant beat sitting outside your tent with a bottle of red wine that cost next to nothing.
Yep-that's my argument anyway-cheaper fuel, food, wine, free parking, no traffic jams-come to think of it why did I ever agree to stay in the UK this summer?? You can't beat £45 for a rtn ticket across the channel for 5 people (£4.50 each way!!) just need to agree on a site now. We went to the Vendee last year but don't really want to travel so far this time-any ideas anyone?
Looks like Brittany then Jules, plenty of good cheap sites, very much like Cornwall without the traffic and the rain and the crowds and the Cornish Pasties, hang on, I love pasties but hey go for it.................
Definately Southern Brittany. Low enough to chance on some good weather and brilliant sites. The coast is stunning and if you centre yourself around somewhere like Carnac there are great beaches and plenty to do.

Don't forget, if you're going in July you may have to book sites. Some sites may not yet be 'open for booking' because of their very short season - but if you are choosing a popular site then an early enquiry might be best.
Thanks all for your ideas-looking at Brittany now. Caroline, you are right-planning in the cold winter months is all part of the fun for me and with the power of the internet it's so easy to do it all independantly. We all fell in love with the french way of life last year and I can imagine we'll be going back year after year from now on especially if we can get a good deal on the crossing.

You will probably find your total spend for France will be less than Cornwall---
Billy, you don't know how right you are, we took a year off from France last year and went to Cornwall and it cost us a fortune, so much so that I vowed never to go there again even tho' we love the place. To make matters worse, it rained most of the 2 weeks we were there, that was the main reason for not wanting to go again, so unpredictable.

We go every year Julie and have never paid more than £50 for the crossing and sometimes it is as low as £38 Dover to Calais or Dunkirk. The cost of living is so much cheaper over there as well with 2 and 3 course menus for 12 to 15 euros, campsites and fresh food and wine all cheaper than UK. We noticed this Chrismas when we were over there in a Gite that the petrol is not much cheaper these days although there is still a saving on desiel.
Hi Daisychain, what about Normandy? The Chateau Martragny is lovely - it's just outside Bayeux, not far from the WW2 beaches, if the weather's kind, it's a delightful place.
We stayed in Camping de Penboch, Arradon, near Vannes in Southern Brittany. It was a fab site, excellent location and we will definitely be returning there sometime in the future.
We plan to do the Loire this year - I always try to go somewhere different each year, but Brittany was so fab that we have to go back.
We have 3 kids (16, 9, 4) and they all loved Penboch, and the Golfe du Morbihan is breathtaking. And the with the beautiful towns of Vannes and Auray just a very short drive away, we found it to be just the best!
Wherever you go - hope you have a good time. Any advice on sites in the Loire?
