Me again! Any idea how long this will take - we arrive in Calais about mid day - aim to drive about half way and then stop over night - any cheap hotel recommendations (family of 4) and where?

Also anyone stayed at Les Grottes de Roffy or Les Granges in the Dordogne?

The whole journey should take about 7/8 hours.  Not stayed at either and without your route I would suggest that to look at potential campsites around the Orleans (about 3to4 hour drive) area would be about half way.  Have you checked the municipal sites in the region?

Just realised you're looking at taking a tent.  why not look for a small hotel - the Accor group or  Les Villages, should prove fruitful and reasonably inexpensive.

Calais to Sarlat, is 512 miles. Like previous post, I have'nt stayed at either but you could check out Les Penneyrals.

We've done it in a day from Calais, but that was with an 8am start, and it was a long day. Try the hotel as suggested, or the Villages hotels. Basic, cheap and clean.
Jim.

Try a search for Etap hotels for en suite family rooms or Formule 1 for family rooms without facilities. About 34 euros for the first and 27 euros for the second. France has hundreds of both and they are always in easy access of the motorway or major town. Rouen is a good half way point and has both on its outskirts.

Orleans is half way to Sarlat. There are Ibis and Kyriad hotels off junc 14 of A10 or just a little further on there's a  Formula 1 hotel just off junc 1 of A71. Then follow A71 to Vierzon then A20 to Saralt. which is mainly toll free.

Can't help with your two sites

It's a long way in 30+ degree temp in a car with no air conditioning like our first trip to the area.  I would definitely go back to les Granges but I think I would have a stopover - like the previous posts the Etaps etc are good value, usually very clean and just worth it to arrive a little less frazzled!  Tha Sarlat area is lovely, lots to see and do but also very British which to us is not the point of going abroad in the first place! Sorry to offend anyone!

Be a bit more specific Tim. Where are you towing from and too.

Have friends who have been to Les Grottes de Roffy for about the last 10 years and love it. I know it changed hands last year as they went to the 'leaving party' for the previous owners!

Been to that area for the last 5 years years  - favourite site is Camping La Riviere at Les Eyzies. Camped there last year and going again this year. Nothing really flash, but a superb restaurant, nice people and nice site. Love the area, and the people are lovely. Sarlat is wonderful, fasntastic market on Saturday and Wednesday. Go in on an evening for a meal if you can - the atmosphere is superb.

There is a Comfort Hotel on outskirts of Chartres which is quite good and reasonable.

When are you going?

Janet
