Hi

Thinking about a stay at the chateau gandspette site just outside St-Omer between Calais and Lille this Easter.  Anyone stayed there before, comments on the site and the area very much appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

Did a stopover there on the way south last year and again for a few nights on the way back.

On the first stopover we were in the middle of what seemed like permanant pitches, they all had little wooden huts next to them with kitchens in them. It was nice to be among French people, who were all friendly.

On the way back we were in a much more open area with less trees and it seemed brighter and nicer to be honest, so have a look around before you pick your pitch.

The owners are friendly and the site is well cared for, we had a meal in the restraunt that was nothing to write home about but was pleasant enough.

It had two pools which were basic but clean.

The toilet blocks are imaculate and modern, nice hot showers.

It had rained a lot last year before we arrived and the pitches were very very soft.

Lots to do around and about, we went to La Coupole, which is were the germans were going to manufacture the V2 rockets, it is now a museum and its really good, you could spend a day there.

there is a V2 launch bunker just down the road as well.

We went to paris Plage for the day which is a lovely seaside resort.

Hope this helps

Thanks kevinm, helps a lot, have heard the area is lovely and worth a visit.  We usually go Poole/Cherbourg and travel down the west coast so this will be a nice change.

Cheers, Steve

Steve, We Have used this excellent site for the past few years, usually as a 2/3 night stopover en route back to the UK, its has become something of a tradition to stop here at the end of our summer trips to France. The area is very interesting with endless siteseeing possibilities including day trips over the border into Belgium. This year we have booked a night on the way out and 3 nights on our return, we are using Norfolkline Dover to Dunkerque, and the site is just off the main route between Dunkerque Port and St Omer. Enjoy your stay at Gandspette. Hope this helps

I would like to echo Humberflyers comments on Gandspette. We have been visiting this campsite for a number of years and watched it develop. Having stayed at about 5 campsite near to Calais this is by far the best. I have always found the restaurant meals to be very good and they do some Flemish dishes if two can agree to share. I have some pictures on my website if you would like to have a look. They accept Camping Cheques out of season which I assume includes Easter. It was interesting to read what Kevinm said about where he was pitched. Many years ago this was all permanent vans but over the years they have gradually been taken away and given over to touring pitches. On one of the pitches the lady who occupied one of the permanent vans used to paint glass dishes. Last time we were there (September 2005) it looks as if even her van was about to go.

I agree with the other recommendations - we went there last year for an overnight stop at the beginning of our holiday and were so impressed that we went back for a further three nights at the end. We intend to finish this year's holiday there too. In the restaurant, I recommend the 'Porc Hesdinoise' - just like Beef Bourguinonne, but made with pork. St Omer is an interesting town for a visit, with a huge Saturday market, Lille is within an easy drive and Cassel is a pretty small town not too far away. I'm just concerned that with all these recommendations, it will get booked up and we shan't get in!

Yes, we have been there too and I would agree with all that has been said.
