We have always used the Caravan Club Red Pennant European cover. Not the cheapest I expect but the one others are judged by. I am sure the CC&C must do something similar as well.

Insure and Go. Underwritten by Europ Assist, identical cover to companies charging 2 to 3 times as much but very, very cheap.

I've been looking at insure and go for our personal insurance, it is very cheap about £20 for 17 days. I don't need breakdown for the car as it I am on my last of 3years cover from the RAC which I got free ! when I bought the car.

Cheapest is not always best. I have always used Red Pennant because I have heard nothing but praise for the service. If you have an accident or are taken ill whilst on holiday you will not want any hassle. You will want to be got home as simply as possible.

Last summer the husband of a couple on our site broke his arm. He was insured with Norwich Union. He and his wife had to go home without their unit and Norwich Union could not tell them when it would be collected. Their car and caravan was eventually collect several days later. In these circumstances Red Pennant would have taken the couple home with their unit.

Insurance is a must, but dont expect UK levels of service from the breakdown recovery in France.

Our first camping trip abroad last year was blighted by our Skoda Felicia overheating drastically when the head gasket went. On seeing we had a problem we left the motorway at the exit that was right by us at the time, as motorways in france do not have hard shoudler the full length of them but have 'refuge points' every so often. We got to the top of the exit ramp onto a quiet country road and phoned the contact number using a mobile phone. The perosn at the other end could not locate where we were despite us being 100m form a motoway junction and my wife speaking french. It took 3 1/2 hours for them to locate us.
We were towed to a nearby Skoda garage and a hire car provided.... but after a few days the garage quoted 3000 euros to repair the engine as the cylinder head had been damaged. The terms of most breakdown cover available mean that if the garage can repair the problem in the time you are there then the insurance will not pay for the car to be returned to the UK. So, with an outrageous cost like that we had no choice but to scrap the car in France. We were provided a hire car to get home but could not take this on the ferry back. We had booked a Le Havre Portsmouth crossing but altered this to go via Calais so we could change the hire car for a UK one allowed to go on the ferry.

Phew, long first post! We havnt been put off camping abroad, we are now finishing off the plans for a trip to the Vendee and the Loire this summer.

My advice would be to read the policy outline and see if the level of cover is what you need before you look at the cost. I've just arranged cover for a Skiing holiday and looked at a number of companies, the level of cover and restrictions varied quit a bit and although I'm sure we won't need the cover, it gives me peace of mind to know that we have a reasonable level of insurance just in case.

A couple of years ago we had an accident on the 2nd day of a three week holiday and the car was unusable. As we were insured with Red Pennant they arranged for us to continue the holiday. If we had insured with some of the cheaper companies we would have been forced to return home straight away.
