Thinking about our holiday in June - OH suggested the Loire Valley - Had a look on internet - Apart from lots of chateaus and the River Loire - what else is there.  He read somewhere it is a good place for cycling - is it?  Very gentle cycling that is.  Might take our bikes - had a look on search engines but can't find anything except guided tours that cost a fortune.  Are there any guide books you can get?  How far is the Loire Valley from the coast - he's obsessed with coastal walks!!!  Methinks its just sandy beaches - not our thing at all.  Also any camp site recommedations would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Triss,

we live here in the Loire, we run a campsite too! There's loads to do apart from the chateaus, which are absolutely well worth seeing! There's the Puy du Fou at Cholet, about an hours drive from us. There's the Zoo at Doue, about half an hour. That's got some very rare species, and is unusual as it's 'underground'! There's the Tank Museum down in Saumur, there's fantastic shopping at Angers & Tours, there's the wine tours with free tasting...loads of cycling around here. It's very quiet, which means ver little traffic! Definitely bring the bikes. If you'd rather leave them at home, then why not hire some of ours? Have a look at our website...see my profile, or have a look at our reviews on here - Le Chant d' Oiseau.

If you want more info, just drop me an e-mail? I can even send you our local Tourist Guide.

PS. The beaches of the Western Loire are around a 2 hour drive from us!

"Do the Loire" you will not be disappointed. Been caravanning in france for 15 years and never had a bad holiday yet. The Loire is everything the previous contributor describes and more. Lots of good sites attached to chateaus. You must experience the area. easy drive within a days drive of the ports.

The Loire is gorgous. Just being anywhere in France is wonderful but the Loire is particularly beautiful. Buy a guide book and take a look at how much there is to see and do. Its one od our favourit destinations.

We love the Loire area and always try to revisit if we have been further south. One of our favourite is Chantipie near Saumur. The site is set on  a plateau overlooking the River Loire with great views especiaaly if you are lucky enough to get a pitch overlooking the river. About 10 mins. drive from the town of Sumur which is really worth a visit. Although about 60 miles from Saumur a trip to Futuroscope at Poitiers is great for a day out as is Puy du Fou near Cholet. If you want the beach why not go for a 2 centre holiday and get the best of both worlds.

Agreed!  Stayed at Chantepie a few years ago - it's a lovely spot, the campsite was very clean and the facilities new, and Saumur itself is delicious!  Even if you are not interested in wine the tours of the caves are very interesting and you can usually get a free tour because the campsites have tokens to give away.  The roads are quiet away from the main town and I remember a village that had an artists fair (was it Les Rosiers sur l'herbe) and another village nearby with the most fantastic fountain that kept us all amused for ages!  Will be back sometime!
