Hi , just wanting a little help. Would like to stay at a campsite in this area, but looking at the map and reading some of the comments in the CC european guide the roads seem to present a challenge when towing. Has anyone been and if so have you any recommendations for the best routes and also sites. ( will be travelling from Avignon) Thanks

We want to stop round about Castellanne . We can see loads of sites, but I'm worried about travelling on mountain roads in case we make a wrong turn or get stuck somehow. Does anyone know what the roads are like round this area?
Is it better to approach from one direction rather than another? I've got a map and there are loads of wiggly turns (bad roads in my book) which ever way I look
If its any help we followed the Route Napoleon to Castallane with the large twin axle chateau we had at the time. We did not have any real problems. The whole area is well worth the trip and the white water rafting is great fun.(The rafting used to be on 2 days a week and finding a campsite for the night before and after a rafting day can be an issue. It is one of the few places I`d say it is better to book in advance if you can). We stayed at Camping L`Aigle in Aiguines because it has fantastic views and we did not feel crowded in. The sites around Castellane (which we looked around) seemed pleasant enough but very claustrophobic.

We spent 10 days here last summer and absolutely loved it. We stayed in Castellane, in Camping International which wasn't at all claustrophobic because it wasn't at the bottom of the valley but higher up, out in the open with nice views. A pleasant site. We have a TT (combicamp) and had no problems getting in or out of the area, though we did leave Castellane, heading for Grenoble, not by the route Napoleon (which we'd arrived by) but a side route which struck us as having less hairpin bends when going uphill. It was fine.
No problems with the roads, just take it steady and enjoy the superb mountain views. If you want a quiet site try the Provencal, north out of Castellane, on the left just past the larger Camping International. If returning north, use the N75 Sisteron Grenoble route over the gradual climb of the Col de la Croix Haute. ( The Route Napoleon N85 uses the Col Bayard just North of Gap which is not recommended for caravans travelling northwards. (sharpest of sharp hairpins),
camp du verdon was a great site near castellane, see eurocamp website The Millau bridge still under construction on my visit 2 years ago, much better now traveling now
my caravans 23 foot shipping length no access problems
