Britany can as has been said earlier be a bit temperamental.  We stayed for three weeks in North West Brittany, well a little South of Brest.  The camp site was superb, fabulous pool complex, great club and friendly staff.  It was walking distance of the beach except - it rained every day and night almost continuously for about the first 17 days!  During that we seriously contemplated cutting our losses and coming home but we stuck it out.  Got fed up visiting aquariums (seemed to be about the only thing to do in the rain) but when the sun eventually came our it was glorious (especially whilst queuing to catch the ferry back!).

We went from Plymouth to Roscoff but Portsmouth to Le Havre or Caen is probably a good option too.  We went Portsmouth to Le Havre last year when travelling down to Poitiers - that was very easy.

I have always found driving in France or anywhere abroad, quite straight forward - just watch out for roundabouts - make sure you go around anit-clockwise, and in rural France on quiet roads watch out for saying: "Vous n'avez pas la priorite - which means that vehicles emerging from the right will have proirity over you!  To be honest there are hardley any juctions like that left anymore! 

It is well worth making the effort to head further South when you feel confident though.

     Remember...you need to carry .spare bulbs ..red triangle ..a high visability vest if you get out of the car on a motorway is advised  and a first  aid kit....if you come on an accident and you are asked to provide your first aid kit and a fire extinguisher to a Police Officer at the scene and you cant............they could be very difficult ....its a requirement.
