We are thinking about going to Italy this year for about 10 days, spending time in France on the way there and back for a further 10 days. When we researched campsites in Italy, they all seem to be very expensive compared to France. Is this normal? and are the general day to day costs more expensive in Italy? We have a trailer tent and 3 children. We would appreciate any info or views.

In the days before the Euro I thought campsites in Italy were more expensive but more recently they don't appear to be so bad. Don't forget that in France you have such a vast range of campsites from municipals charging no more than you would pay for CL/CS at home to the all singing and dancing campsites at £25/£30 a night.

I visit Italy every year and the average price is around £20 per night in high season for pitch and two adults. Under 14s are around 5 euro per night. Camping cheques are available out of season.

Just had a look at some Adriatic sites, and the prices are a bit steep
Have you thought of the Tuscany coast, the sites there seem cheaper
Or try the North western lake Magiorre not as busy as Garda

Not too bad around Venice. Try Ca Savio. Venice is well worth a visit. The Lakes too, about the same price, £20 for 2 adults.

You love the heat then!!??!! VERY hot there that time of year. And probably quite a bit more expensive. Can you not wait until September? The whole of Italy goes on holiday in August.

I thought English schools were still off for part of September. Would be best if you left it as late as possible, the worst of the Italian rush is over after the first 3 weeks of August. Now, when are the French holidays? Don't they all go off all at the same time too? Is that August, I'm not very sure. Some sites also have a minimum stay in high season, at Ca' Savio it is 7 nights. Their high season price for you would be almost £45 according to the CC book. OUCH!!!!!
