Our 15yr old who declined to join us last yr has just announced he will be with us this year for our 2 week holiday in France. We had intended to slowly drive down from Calais to the Dordogne staying in hotels along the way - we were 4 (Me and hubby + 2 youngsters!) and one room would have been OK - does anyone know if any of the hotel chains will accept 5 in a room? - serious cost implications if not!

I would suggest the Formule 1 hotels. You would need two rooms, but at max 30 Euros (£20ish) a room, the cost implications shouldnt be too serious! http://www.hotelformule1.com/

TethersEnd, I have found this on the bb hotels website, after some searching:

52A6Bis>For my child, from what age is it compulsory to have its own bed ?

Up to 3 years old, your child can share your bed (or you can bring a crib*). Any child older than 3 years old will be counted as an adult and will therefore need to have a full bed booked.
* B&B does not provide any extra beds.

Which is good news as it means we can all get into one room this year at least without having to sneak people in LOL! I'm going to book a bb for the way back.

Cheers for all the top advice folks, keep it coming. I've found a site you probably all know about already called www.mappy.com which has pretty good directions for European driving, but more importantly lets you know what the toll charges are going to be for each part of the journey, great when you are on a tight budget.

We are a family of 5 we prefer Etap as loo and shower is ensuite( F1 down corridor- and at 3am not always easy to remember your door code!)

You will need 2 rooms. We have always been given opposite ones or adjacent ones in past when reserved online. We just split up the adults. No good if you are unable to spend a night without your partner.

There are 5 of us and we take to small tents and do an overnight stop when we are tired!  We have the kettle, party grill and crockery on top just to see us through, it is also useful when coming back because you can pack up the day before leaving just the two small tents to take down!  The trailer is usually packed and ready for an early start.  We are going to the Dordogne this August!

looks like the Dordogne will be busy - last year it was deserted for the last week of Aug and the temperatures were SCORCHIO- mid 90s with hardly a single cloud.

I complained it was too hot to do anything apart form play in the river to get an appetite and a thirst - worked for me.

We are at Soleil Plage week 28 Aug again this year - can't wait.

You can book through Logis de france and say you want a family room which will often sleep 5.
