Chateau du Gandspette near St Omer (Eperlques) we haved stayed three times now.
We luv it andit is only 21 miles fromcalais but if you wannabe a little further away the site at Amiens is lovely and the tow n itself is well worth a visit with the restaurants along the Somme, and the Cathedral in Amiens is beautiful.
Also there is La Bien Assise 11 miles fromCalais , have heardgood reports but have never stayed there.
Same here La Bien Assise at Guines is ideal for Calais and only 20 minutes from the tunnel/ferry. Nice quite site with good facilities most people on there are going overnights either coming or going and they are geared up for that. The restaurant was fine and a good shop. Showers etc are good ( apart from the french kids having a water bomb fight! which was soon stopped!) Would definately use it again.

We booked Chateau du Gandspette, then cancelled cos all our friends were staying at La Bien Assise. We stayed with them (twice now) and it was very nice.
Chateau du Gandspette charged our credit card in full, despite cancelling two months before the booking. Oh well.
If you want cheap sites without booking-& you are going A16-A28 toward Rouen--go off at J26 A16 Le Touquet-after a couple of miles you will come into Etaples-drive strait thru town & there is a camping municipal on left-signposted thru town-45mins from Calais--or carry on toward Rouen-2hrs from Calais J8 A28 Neufchatel-en-Bray drive into town campsite signposted--
Yes, I have to agree with Vic, over the years we have used both sites and IMHO Gandspette is much the better site, the Loo blocks are much better, aswell as the general atmosphere. I have found La Bien Assise to suffer from heavy usage during high season and it had a transit camp feel about it.
Billy, have you stayed in the sites in Etaples and Neufchatel en Bray? What are they like? Do you have to book or can you just turn up? We'll be travelling on 30th July and need a site on the way to Rouen - so they sound ok.

Hi Dotty--used both sites in last couple of yrs--Etaples is just a basic municipal-showers/toilets ok--about £5 p.n for campervan+2 very big-cant see it ever bein full--Neufchatel-we stopped end of last July-this is privately owned site very clean-£11 p.n--very crowded with overnight stoppers(Saturday) but people still arriving at 9pm & getting in--you could book but owners spoke no English--
