We are having 5 nights in the vendee and 6 nights in the Loire at Camping Pierefitte just south of orleans for our summer holiday this year.  After reading the posts about things to do in the vendee I don't know how we're going to fit it all in.  What I was wondering is, is there plenty to do in the Loire, ie things to vist, or shall we stay in the vendee for the 11 nights instead?

Thanks

Dionne

Dionne,

We are going to the Loire this year. It will be our 8th time there. I reckon we've seen about 20% of what the region has to offer. You will never stuck for something to see or do there.

Hi Ally

How do you find the weather in the Loire. Its a beautiful area I know, with loads to do but it always worries me that we might not have good weather if we stay that far north. We tend to go south, to the Dordogne at the very least.

We went to the Loire for the first time last year and the weather was fantastic! I'm sure either Floydfan or La Touche will be along soon to give you as much info as they can seeing as they are both living there now.

Dionne, there's plenty to do and see in the Loire so I certainly would not change your plans.

Sorry, I didn't have the time to reply. I was out enjoying the sunshine....

Rather than post a link to our campsite (which isn't the point, as you're staying somewhere else....), I'll give you a few ideas. Why not try the Cadre Noir at Saumur (National Equitation Centre of France). Great displays of horsemanship. There's the magnificent Puy du Fou at Cholet. That has to rank as one of the best days out in France! Spectacular! There's the amazing amount of Chateaux to discover, like Chenonceau, Azay le Rideau, Chambord, Bauge, Saumur, Angers (Don't miss the Apocalypse Tapestry). There's the 24 hour race at Le Mans. (OK it's in Sarthe, but only an hour from us). There's the Musee des Blindes in Saumur. (Tank Museum). This is quite apart from all of the wine tours that you can take. One of the best we've found is the Gratien & Meyer one just outside saumur. It costs 2 Euros for the tour, which takes you deep into the troglodyte caves. Then you get your entry fee back when you buy some wine! There's the Zoo at Doue. An 'underground' zoo! Well worth seeing. There's a great one too at La Fleche! There's Holly Park just outside Bauge for the kids to get all their funfair thrills!

Then there's the shopping, Tours, Angers, Nantes (IKEA)!!! There's the fantastic markets too....I could go on, but I won't spoil it for you. Just come & see. You'll love it, I guarantee. If you're in our area, pop in for a cuppa!

Thanks for all the info, I think we will stick to our original plans as the loire sounds just as nice or even better, not as commercialised.  Would love to pop in for a cuppa Stu if we are in your area.  We haven't been brave enough to do it alone yet, ie take our own stuff over to France but maybe next year.  Have been on your website and the one for twinlakes and both sites look lovely.  Cant wait for July now, I'm sick of the freezing cold wet dreary weather that we're having in the uk at the moment.

The gardens of the Chateau at Villandry are a must - even if it is a bit of a tourist hot spot.

Would it be necessary to book campsites out of the UK school holidays in France? to all those seasoned travellers.

many thanks

Hi Wendy

I would advise you to book - the area you are going to is very busy all year round.

We get a lot of stopovers here going onto La Rochelle and many of our caravan storers also go there.

If we can be of any further help just ask or email us.
