Hi Folks

After sampling the delights of Benodet in Brittany for many years plus forays in Northern Spain, Switzerland and Austria we are now considering Ital for the first time..

We have a twin axle van and have to go in late July/August as we are both teachers.  We have up to 5 weeks away in the summer.  Our 4x4 is up to coping with towing in all terrains so far encountered.  We prefer campsites that are NOT too large or commercialised and with some shade and privacy.  We like sea lake/views and, if poss, somewhere to play with our inflatable dinghy (outboard motor).

We would be VERY grateful for any site suggestions and other advice from any Italy lovers on this site.  We would probably think in terms of a 2/3 sites with some touring around.

What are the best areas for a quiter holiday in Italy whilst still being able to visit some interesting historical/scenic places?

Is it a problem to find pitches large enough for our van (7.36 metres).  No motor mover so we have to reverse into pitches.

I know this is a bit vague but all helpful suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Tim

Sudtirol is a nice area.

this site allows you to search for camp sites  http://www.suedtirol.info/SInfo/Common/ReservationEngine/EN_Accomodations.html?Group=EntryPage/Search/Accomodations

we also have a large twin axle van towed by a 4X4 and are heading that way at the same time as you, but only for around 2 weeks I'm afraid.

Have fun

Michael

We went to Italy 4 or 5 years ago, we stayed at Lake Garda and Venice, plenty of water. We booked sites through the CC thogh and they where rather large and commercialised, didin't really bother us as we were out most of the day sightseeing. I have toured  through quite a bit of Europe, both North and South and I have found that pitches in general are on the tight side compared to the UK. One answer might be the municipal type sites which tend to be smaller and quieter. Sorry I can't be of more help. If you are a member of the CC they do a book of continental sites that you could try using, I have copies of both but they are a bit old now. There may also be an internet site for Italy.

Camping Panoramico in Fiesole which is a small town over looking Florance was quite memorable for its views over Florance & sunsets over the city too.  Not quite what you asked for I know, but a good place to stop to explore Florance & some of the Tuscany area.  http://www.florencecamping.com/en/Fiesole_Home.asp

Happy Camping!

Thanks everyone for the VERY HELPFUL suggestions.  We are still open to further suggestions/comments, especially from anyone who has been in peak season with a large van (7.36 metres)

Thanks

Tim

 Hi Again folks!

Thought I'd just bump this up to the top for a few more caravan site suggestions.  We're particularly interested in the Italian Lakes - probably the quieter ones for our long van (7.36M) in August.

We may well go on to tour Venice and further south.

Best wishes

Tim
