Just wondering does anyone have any idea if you can stop over in a layby in a camper van in the Repulic of Ireland. I know the Irish are quite relaxed about most things but some things they can be quite strict on.

I would not advise stopping for the night in a layby in Ireland but even if you could you would need to be very vigilent.  Firstly there are not that many of them and they now mostly have height restriction bars in order to stop the travellers (gypsies) moving into them.  We cannot get into a layby anymore (for a cup of tea )with our caravan while enroute which is very frustrating!!

Must agree with Marz. Best bet is 24/7 shopping areas, but be very careful security is very strict. Why not come North of the border lol.

Thanks for that, well now I know not to do it, got an 18 month old toddler so won't be risking it. It was just an idea, travelling on the 18.30 HSS sailing with a destisnation of Ashbourne, Co. Meath so will just have to arrive late now and sort the little one out at my mams, unless I can find a campsite near to Dun laoighire.

Any ideas?

Thanks for that Chris, I've added that one to my favourites, would suit us nicely.

You seem to be a mind of information,so,

Do you know of any websites that detail campsites in the Republic, there do not appear to be very many unlike the UK where they are everywhere.

We are staying with family for a few days in May and then are considering a few days in either Tipperary or Waterford, but not sure which at the moment. Small campsites would be fine, with just the basics.

Thanks again

We had a wonderful tour of Southern Ireland in 2003, but it was extremely difficult to find a layby! The few we saw always had height barriers. Camac Valley is an excellent site - buses run from there into the city centre. You would not wish to drive in.

 Ireland is lovely.

Graham

Just a wee note if your still looking campsite around Dub...Ashbourne is just outside Dub and you might be just as well driving there when you arrive, especially at that time as it wouldnt be very busy.
