Why not open an account with Nationwide and use a debit or credit card - both have very low charges and a good exchange rate

Hi Nanmoff

A lot of banks here in France will either not cash them or will charge a high commision to cash them.

I'm sure that the French post office is the cheapist place to cash them.

TethersEnd sugestion is prob' the best & cheapist!

just take your credit & debit/atm cards(& pin numbers)-use your credit cards for supermarket-petrol-& paying at larger campsites--use your debit/atm card to draw cash--theres as many hole in wall machines in France as in UK--imform your bank you will be using your cards abroad before you go--theres no need for eurocheques-travellers cheques etc--

My formula exactly = Don't draw cash using a credit card or you pay interest from the moment you get it - unless you have put your credit card account into credit before you go. No charge for using Debit card for getting cash anywhere.

Ahhhh.....you mean 'camping cheques'? They're mainly used on the larger sites here in France, and mostly out of season. they cost (I think)£10.30 or so for the night, inclusive of EHU, so they're not a bad deal.

Try HERE for more info.

I'll second that. We have used our flex account cards in many countries and found them to be safe, convenient, and we get the rate of exchange on the day without any hidden "extras", or deductions. Travellers cheques are, to us, a waste of time and money.

I agree with all above, most ATM's detect that its an English card and you get all the instructions in English, so theres no need to worry about understanding how to use  the machines.

The only place that we had problems using debit or credit cards was the 24 hour petrol station. The machines just wouldn't accept our cards.
