We're planning a walking/loafing caravan trip to the Annecy region in late May and early June, and would like info on good sites both near the lake and near the mountains. What do I mean by "good sites"? Good size pitches, pref. hedged, some shade, not too crowded together, etc., and not reached by hairpin bends! You're a knowledgeable crowd; your input will be welcomed.

We spent 3 weeks at La Ravoire last year. Lovely peaceful site and handy for both sides of the lake.

If you put Annecy into the search at the top of the page all the threads will come up. There are various discussions both last year and this. We went to Annecy last year and stayed at camping Europa it was a great site but very busy and on a busy road. The cycle track runs at the back of the site though so it is handy to get into Annecy by bike. A fabulous area you will love it!!

We stayed at L'Escale last September. Lovely site about 25 minutes drive from Annecy. Large pitches and good facilities. Very friendly staff and nice and peacefull. Would definitely go back.

I can recommend La Ravoire as well.  Great site with very helpful staff and in a very good location, right on the cycle track that runs right down one side of the lake.

We are heading for www.camping-lac-bleu on June 11th as they are giving free nights 10 for price of 8 and 14 for the price of 10.  It is right on the lake near Doussard and should be quiet at that time of year

Thanks for all the info, everyone. I have a feeling we'll be looking at La Ravoire at least, and (being a Yorkshireman) I feel strangely drawn to Lac Bleu also. Some of the threads mention very high temperatures, something we hadn't thought about, so that's a valuable bit of information - be nice to do without the 4 seasons duvet for a change!

Hi John

The year we were at La Ravoire was scorching hot during the day but because of the high altitude, as soon as the sun went down it was quite cold.  I was actually very cold in bed at night and would recommend that if you go, you take the big duvet anyway!

I've posted several times on this subject before. I'm sure my posts will come up in the search, so won't repeat myself too much!

Stayed at Camping Europa last summer, which is a nice, well maintained site, but is on the busy side of the lake next to the main road. Can be noisy and the lakeside is a bit of a hike away.  While there, we looked at the Lac Bleu and really liked it. It's right on the lake (at the oppsite end to Annecy town), has beach area and boat hire and has good facilities too. Backs onto the same busy road, but I'd just try to avoid that part of the site. If we were going again, we'd go there. I have heard good reports of La Ravoire, but it's not a lakeside setting.

Re temperature: as you are in the mountains, this is very variable! We were cold at night and had to buy the kids some warmer pyjamas! Make sure you take extra layers!

Thanks Marian.  As you can see above we have booked lac blue as we are getting 14 nights for the price of 10 but we have not stayed here before, but used the Caravan Club's Europe book as recommendation.

Hi, we stayed at Europa and are going back this year, have to put earplugs in at night though because of busy road. We are going back for the pool, the site, the lake and town.  We visited lac blue- horrendous. Although it was August. Tent City, with a earsplitting sound system in a barn type structure in the centre- trod in dog poo- husband would not even walk through to look at lake - got out as fast as we could.  Out of season probably a different story. Annecy has about 10+ campsites round its main road- If it is not school hols you could pick and choose when you get there. Have a good time, Joanne

On our trip around Europe last year we stopped off at Annecy. We were going to use the municipal site but it was at the end of a festival weekend and pretty busy. We headed off a little further away and chanced following a sign to a campsite.
Instead of staying 2-3 days, we stayed 7. It was a lovely little place, very quiet and surrounded by countryside. Was a very short drive into Annecy (although the parking can be fun, use the car park a little further away and walk along the lake edge into Annecy!) and you're about 5 minutes from a supermarket.
There are nice quiet roads to walk/cycle around and it's very peaceful and excellent for just relaxing under the trees. Feels like a nice walled in Garden more than a campsite.
Excellent facilities, very clean, when we arrived the owner was on his hands and knees scrubbing out the showers, he did this every day!

There is an excellent municipal site, Camping Le Belvedere, in Annecy with very good facilities and lovely views. Quiet and peaceful, at least when we were there last May. You can walk down into the Old Town in 10-15 minutes. Many good walks from the site.

Well, we finally did settle on La Ravoire, and were very pleased with it. It lived up to everything said about it, even the temperatures - it snowed on the tops at the start of June! Only thing to watch: there were a few sites with ant problems (including ours, of course), so check with Philippe when you arrive. Great cycling/walking/in-line skating track too! Thanks again for all the helpful advice.
