ROME (May 3) - He had heard Rome was expensive but nothing prepared the Hong Kong tourist for a 990 euro, or $1,251, beer.

The unwary visitor received the bumper bar bill for a drink sipped near Rome's most famous street, Via Veneto, where beers usually cost as much as 10 euros, Rome mayor's office said.

The tourist, who was traveling alone, was invited to the bar by a tout who served him a beer and then said it would cost him 990 euros. He bartered it down to 490 euros, but the bar owner ended up taking 990 euros off his credit card anyway.

"When the bill arrived I thought it was safer to pay it. I was scared something could happen to me if I didn't," the man, whose name was withdrawn, told Rome mayor's office that is investigating the crime.

The tourist, who is from Hong Kong but lives in Germany and has a British passport, tried to report the fraud to the police but said he could not make himself understood because no one spoke English..

That's amazing!.
I do remember about 10 or so years ago, a guy who was learning the job, decided that as he had turned 21years old and had not a lot of luck with the ladies, that he and a couple of friends would head to Soho in London and visit a few clubs.
The first club they entered, charged them £30 a drink (including cola), advised them to buy the barmaid a drink, and further encouraged them to stay until their wallets were emptied.

Needless to say, he was rather sheepish about his experience the next day.

Just recently, I was quite innocently overcharged for my groceries in my local SuperU. I checked my change, and what I knew I had in my pocket. The totals were out by around 50 Euros! I asked the young girl on the till if she'd check the totals at the end of the day and let me know 'demain'. I called there a few days after as I'd been busy to find myself being chased up the aisles by a very apologetic young girl. She really was sweet, and so very sorry for the mistake. She told me to checkout through her till and I would be reimbursed.

I just wonder if the same honesty would be found in supermarkets in the UK, or the USA?

Since then, the young lady always smiles, and has a chat with us whenever we're in there. Bless!
